Beware Austin Plumbing Supply
Comments (21)Aaarrgh!!! I lost $1080 because Austin Plumbing Supply ordered the wrong parts for my antique clawfoot tub and now it won't pass inspection. I gave them photographs and the measurements requested but they said (1) I did not describe the tub to them or provide them any measurements, (2) I did not warn them that the tub would be inspected and so it is not their fault the parts do not meet code for my tub, (3) that *I* made mistakes in ordering that a licensed plumber would not make and so they can't be held responsible. I was then blamed for signing the order form and told that by so doing I took all the risk. The sales staff is courteous and nice but if they make an error, the owner comes out to challenge every concern and insults you with every breath, asserting knowledge about your transaction process that he could not know. And he goes from one excuse to the next in order to blame you. At one point, he said that he would not take back $1080 in parts because one subset did not have one of the original boxes the pipes were shipped in. The "box" was just corrugated cardboard taped around them with my name written in magic marker. If my experience is typical, this place should not be in business. I left in a complete rage. Use any company but this....See Morekarbon faucet online or from home depot vs. plumbing supply
Comments (6)I have the Stages 45 sink with a single Delta Leland stainless faucet. I cannot see the use for 2 faucets in the Stages sink. The pull-down feature of the Leland allows me to reach all areas of the sink easily, it's especially good for cleaning the sink and rinsing the cleanser from the shallow area. I've read more than once that the quality control on the faucets sold at the big box stores can be sketchy, as in they aren't inspected at the factory. I bought all my faucets online and have had zero problems in 18 months. The Karbon looks nice in videos, but be sure and see one in person at a Kohler showroom before you make a decision....See MorePlumbing supply store v. Big box
Comments (12)As someone who works internally at one of the top toilet/bath/faucet companies in the US, I can tell you that toilets and bath tubs sold at big box stores and plumbing supply stores are the same. As another member mentioned, as long as the model numbers match between retailers, it is the same product. Plumbing supply stores certainly offer more high-end products, but the big-box stores actually tend to get the newer/higher-tech offerings first. As long as you see the specs you want (tub materials, flush type, etc.) I wouldn't worry about where I'm purchasing these products. And no one sells "factory-seconds" to a big-box store. The risk is far too great, as all of the companies in this field make around 75% of their money from these big-box stores. The buyers at the big-box stores are extremely picky (rightfully so) and would throw us out if we started sending them "seconds". Faucets are a slightly different story. Suppliers are squeezed pretty hard to offer the lowest cost products to the big box stores, so they tend to have lower quality (read: plastic) internal parts. Plumbing supply stores generally stick to the brass internals, but offer them at a higher price. Keep in mind, these are DIFFERENT products. As above, check part numbers if you are concerned. For the most part, the big box stores want exclusive products, so you more than likely won't find the same products (sold in-store at Lowe's/HD) at plumbing supply houses. Don't be afraid, however, to order something off the Lowe's or HD websites, as they'll typically carry those all-metal, higher quality parts to sell online vs their value-focused in-store products....See MoreDo Electric water heaters from plumbing supply differ from home depot
Comments (7)You could always get one of the more expensive heaters and see if it lasts longer. There is a reason why the 12 year models say they are 12 year and the 6 year models say they are 6 year. You could also buy and aluminum anode and install it in whatever heater you got if that is what you want. Rheems usually are good so you might just either have bad luck or bad water corroding it. Installing them is not hard but you may find some fun surprises, like the connection to the water heater being corroded to the point of not being able to loosen it. So you may have to do more than just loosen the nuts and electrical and replace the heater, some repair to the water lines might be needed....See Moredan1888
