Need well-draining mix, limited to Big Box store supply
Comments (3)I don't know if your Home Dopey has the same planting mixes as the ones in SoCal but, Mine has a cactus/succulent mix that is pretty reasonable for potted citrus. I can't remember the brand but was thinking it was Kellogs. It has pumice, fir bark, sand, and not too much peat moss. I certainly would not mix any regular potting mix with it as then you would go from "too much" peat moss to "way, way too much" peat moss. It is not as good as the EB Stone Citrus Cactus mix that is readily available around here but is way better than you would expect to find at a Home Dopey. A wick does help the perched water table a lot....See MoreGarden Centers - Greenhouses - Big Box Stores - Specialty Stores
Comments (7)Brocks! We're heading down there and to Dearborn Farms tomorrow. To be honest, I shop all over. We bought 12 boxed roses at Dearborn Farms last spring, but I got some really nice potted roses in Lowe's (Woodbridge, Jersey City, and Old Bridge) and Wal-Mart (Secaucus, Cinnamonson, and Old Bridge) -- all of them did really well, and have leafed out like crazy this spring. Like you, I've been buying Superthrive at Wal-mart (it's not out yet, and I don't have all that much left right now -- and not every store had it, either) as well as fish emulsion. We got some great annuals there to fill in the gaps in the plants we bought in Van Wingerden's and Gro-Rite up in Lincoln Park. I get potting soil for my containers and garden soil to beef up the beds in Lowe's, and I get mulch there, too. I get pots and little plastic garden fencing in Wal-Mart. Home Depot was disappointing last year, especially since we'd gotten some wonderful roses there in the past (in Clifton and Woodbridge). But Clifton's garden center has gone -way- downhill, and Woodbridge isn't what is used to be. But none of them compare to Hoverman's, now sadly closed....See MoreWhat are all the big box stores for craft supplies?
Comments (5)In our area (Athens, Georgia) we have Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and Walmart even has a fairly good crafting section. Check online for coupons for Hobby Lobby and Michael's. They have some good ones. Also if you are ordering supplies look for coupons there too. I recently save $20. on my order with Artbeads...See MoreSupply/distribution center vs big box store
Comments (44)@ Sophie The entire reason that cost plus contracts were born was to remove contractors from quality decisions. For example, when NASA wants to build a rocket, they want to ensure quality rather than that it can be done under budget. This is done by control of the bidding process from all subcontractors. This idea of quality control and it's side effect of cost control was perfect for capital investments by businesses and so shortly after WW2 they stole it. When used well, by parties who understand the ideas, it works well for home construction also. However, too many contractors want to use it as if it is essentially a fixed price contract without any risk to them. If you want to ensure quality, or protect supply house relationships, then use a fixed price bid. However, if you want to be largely indemnified from any loss by using a cost plus contract then you give up all rights to dictate quality. There are many far less complimentary words to call someone who takes advantage of the lack of knowledge and experience of their customers. I went with lazy, because I believe the reason most contractors do this is because they simply don't want to go through the effort of producing a fixed price bid, when they can do a serious bid for their money and rough estimates for everything else. @ Joseph Nothing in the original post makes me think they agreed at any time to use his recommended supplier. They even call it a recommended supplier rather than a required supplier. Just because they are agree to a standard cost plus (contractor's net cost, plus contractor's set fee) doesn't mean he gets to decide where his costs come from. That is the consumer's purview in a cost plus contract....See Moremillworkman
