Did Pepper Clause not send you everything on your list? Got too much of one pack? Want to trade with others?

How can half-truth, sensationalism, hype, over- and understatements and insinuations be true? Perhaps you have been fighting some old battles that you cant even see and think straight. There is nothing disagreeable about The Dark Garden. In fact, from the very beginning, I and few others have pointed out that The Dark Garden can work because it is a version of a simple hydroponic system (and a self-watering planter). As I suggested previously without devaluing your resourcefulness and contribution, you may get improved reception if you could speak about your method and growing experience directly - without making other unnecessary misleading associations or comparisons. My central point remains unchanged in that while your Dark Garden utilizes working principles practiced and made popular by recent self-watering and older simple hydroponic models, "your method" is neither revolutionary nor have you proven or demonstrated that your method has an edge over these existing growing methods as the name or your misleading presentations and statements may suggest. Low tech simple hydroponic growers (and homemade self-watering planters) are popular because often with little investment in materials, these growers eliminate space/weather limitations and are highly productive and user-friendly, and their portable designs can be modified and set up easily (and understood) and have been used by children, urban and rural gardeners, and small farmers around the world in various ways. Furthermore, there is nothing to comprehend about your revolutionary grower or growing method when several people already "comprehended" your method before you were able and willing to present it as it is. What is disagreeable is the off-the-tangent diversions and misleading, if not false, statements you made about your method and about hydroponics implicitly and explicitly. For one, your perceived shortcomings of other hydroponic systems do not demonstrate the superiority of your method. On another matter, did you know these "clueless hydroponic systems" also do not and cannot get air from water? If you are speaking as an expert, then your generalized statements do not serve to inform but to mislead. Various water culture practices simply have different demonstrated or comparative results. Which hydroponic horticulture method might you be comparing your Dark Garden to? Do you have comparative results to support such overstatements or the suggested advantages of your method? Were there negative controls in your experiment to support the analysis of your observation with which to base your findings? Moreover, shorter roots, less plant water uptake (or longer watering periods), or water conservation interpreted to be advantages or unique with your method do not necessary demonstrate quality, productivity, or efficiency of your planter or method. In fact, I can think of several reasons why these interpretive advantages may suggest incorrect observational correlations and analyses of the observer or horticulture inefficiency and problems at different growth stages of a plant. With all the hype and diversions with this introduction for your method, youÂve neither inspired me nor do I have any compelling reason to search for your past comments about The Dark Garden or your method. You, the designer of The Dark Garden, confirmed and introduced the grower (barely) as a method that utilized wicking and evaporation and hydroponic nutrients in your instructions in another recent thread that you are now denying and insinuating as not being understood correctly. Do you even know what your method is? The thought of searching out even more unintelligible statements or bewildering excursions from your past is enough of deterrence. Maybe I'll get to compare and test out your method someday after I build my simple hydroponic systems. To see videos and pictures of the diversity of other low tech (commercial or non-commercial) self-contained soiless growers or simple hydroponic designs and their demonstrated successes that meet your objectives and needs, all you need to do is to surf the net for the multiple models and weblinks I already listed in your other Dark Garden thread recently.

I haven't taken a label at a big box place (HD, Lowe's, Wally World) at face value for years now. I've duly registered my complaints, only to have them ignored each and every time. Okay, so I have grown up with an understanding of hardiness, microclimates, environmental factors and all kinds of information about plants because I was born in Sacramento, CA, lived there until I was 7 years old, and then started traveling all over the world. When my family first purchased a home in Sparks, Nevada in 1973, the first book I purchased from my allowance was the Sunset Garden Book. I was 14. The zone designations are very different from the USDA designations, but those Sunset zones also contain a lot of descriptive information about the climate in a given zone: humidity, high temperatures, low temperatures, rainfall, altitude, sun, cloud cover, winds--everything. Needless to say, I already knew what was likely to succeed in my climate before I purchased my first plants and seeds less than a year later. Sure, it would be nice if big box stores carried information accurate for their locations. Sure, it would be nice if garden center staff had even half a clue. But you don't get information (accurate or otherwise) or helpful staff at big box prices. There's a reason the locally-owned nurseries often charge two to three times as much for the same plant. And even if garden centers here in Reno-Sparks have information available and tolerably trained staff, it's still not adequate. My zip code (89431) spans climate zones ranging from 5a to 7a, and I'm not even considering microclimates. The zip code contains altitudes that differ by as much as 1000 feet (literally ear-popping on some streets), and that have varying degrees of exposure to prevailing wind and weather, at least three different soil types (former marsh clay soil, former river bed sandy soil, and rocky sandy volcanic mountain soil) and varying degrees of proximity to large and small bodies of water (a river, a man-made lake, agricultural ditches, seasonal streams, drainage ponds, high water tables, low water tables, rain shadows and arid desert). It's the same all over the greater Reno-Sparks area. Conditions in my garden are not the same as conditions in another friend's garden only two miles away. It's not realistic to expect any but the most experienced of nursery staff, gardeners themselves, to even come close to knowing what will grow or not grow in a given customer's garden. Perhaps in areas where the climate is more consistent it would be reasonable to expect garden center staff and plant labels to reflect the prevailing conditions. Still, I think that principles of garden shopping and plant selection in Northern Nevada are useful anywhere. Know your own garden, know your own climate, know your own microclimates. Don't expect the vendors to know it for you.

It's a business decision. If stores give things away for free at any point and customers know this they may not buy items in the future, waiting until they know they can get it for free. Whether that is true or not I don't know. I certainly went around local nurseries recently because I knew they were culling stock and got many items on clearance. Would I have bought those if I knew every year the nursery would just give them away in two weeks and I could show up then? I think the 5$ offer was fair. I would buy some for friends and donate the ones people didn't want to a charity or just "resell" on CL.

I bought furniture from Big Lots (upholstered) and it lasted less than a year. I have 3 kids and 4 cats, but I would not say that they were rough on it. The fabric was a chenille and it just did not wear well at all. I felt that it wasn't worth it. I was really disappointed because I loved the style of it. Just remember it's promotional quality and not meant to last long. On the other hand, there's no sense buying something super expensive with kids around (in my opinion). We ended up buying an Ektorp slipcovered sofa from IKEA. It's sturdy and I can change the covers as needed (for about $200).

Great idea, Ronny!

I was thinking of this myself - a separate thread dedicated to helping the "extras", "already haves" or otherwise unwanted seeds find a good home!

I will be adding my details shortly, but wanted to add a quick suggestion...

For those that are also listing extra seeds from the swap in their GW trade lists, perhaps separate those out, or note those with an "*" or something, i.e. -

*Red Jalapeno
...
* = From Holiday Swap

That way, folks can know which seeds you grew yourself, and which ones you received from the swap?

If you're a good gardener, this will help traders, so they can distinguish your stuff from seeds from random sources from the swap.

And if you're really terrible at gardening and saving seeds, then this will also help traders, but for the opposite reason! ;)

Good idea Dave.

Seperate items from the swap or not grown out yourself can have a ** by them. This way people know that what you give them is true or what you got in the swap.

I had already added a ** to my trade list and an explanation at the top of the list. Those seeds from the swap have Members names on them. I wont change the bags on those for trading purposes.

Others can do the same if they wish to update their trading lists.
So, I will fix it here using your exmple. I like the way you stated it. Thanks.

Peppers_Galore sending an email. I got the Chocolate Habanero's from you. I like how you noted where the original seeds came from. I'm putting my own database together and note all the info I can for each cultivar. This is a practice I would like to keep for myself in the future.

I've been seeing multiple people saying that lately. So I just did what I saw others recommend to solve this - I changed the GW settings to allow "members" to see my new E-MAIL addy! As I recently noticed that GW was still pointing to an old E-MAIL account I no longer use, I also set-up a brand new E-MAIL on Yahoo just for GW, will see if that works-out better.

Partly I miscounted . there were quite few repeats.
Plus I opted to keep some of them for future.

@seysonn - GW Msgs do not appear to be working for me right now. I sent both you and peppers_galore E-MAIL via GW, checked box to send copy of to me, but I didn't receive ANYTHING, and you said you didn't get it either!

So then I tried sending myself test msgs via GW, once w/also sending a copy to myself, and once without. So I should have received THREE E-MAIL's f/tests.

I STILL didn't receive ANYTHING!

I just re-sent E-MAIL to peppers_galore directly (w/out going thru GW). But I can't do that for you, because your E-MAIL addy is set to hidden.

Try sending me a msg. If I receive it OK, then I will have a way to respond to you.

If that doesn't work, then you will need to either change your profile (near bottom) to "show my EMAIL address to: member"; OR just send me an E-MAIL directly w/out going thru GW (when you go to screen for sending me a msg, my E-MAIL addy is shown).

Once I have a way to respond to you, I will re-send E-MAIL I tried to send to you before thru GW.

Hey John,

I actually have some that I plan to grow this spring, but I had a friend tell me yesterday that she was looking for colored bhuts. Since I had some things Veda needed, I thought I'd get the Assam and Omnicolor for myself and the Bhuts for Mary, You're a sweety, though. Thank you, John!

I would love some neoguy. I grew them this year but the plants got bacterial spot (badly!) and even though they grew out of it with the help of some copper spray I didn't want to save seeds from them. You don't have an email link, you can email me at missbeeps1@yahoo.com. Thank you!

@DaveinTexas, GW email - this has been going on for me since I really began trading seeds a few months ago. Didn't really notice this when I joined. One thing for certain that I have noticed... new people signing up seem to have an even more difficult time with it. I've seen a couple instances where they put an Ad up (first time Ad) and get multiple replies, and no response from the person placing the Ad. On 2 occasions, if they had their email available, I emailed them directly. Their reply to this was that they had no idea they had so many people responding. On the same day, they answered everyone in their Ad. So now, if their email is available, I'll email them directly too.

@Peppers_Galore, I responded to your email. Sorry it took me a while to get back to ya. Got busy yesterday.

Not a new member (I joined back in 2003), but I did recently update my E-MAIL addy with GW, I wonder if that is what caused this?

In browsing through some of the threads in GW's Exchange Forum, I also noticed MASS QUANTITIES of people complaining about problems with GW E-MAIL interfering with trading!

Looks like only reliable way to communicate with a member is send an E-MAIL directly to them, not thru GW!

No big deal. We can post our email (temporarily) for direct communication. But it is puzzling to me. 4 out of 6 sent me email through GW with no problem. The other 2 could not.

I suspect that maybe you do not finis the "SEND" process, by executing back arrow on the address bar. You have to exit as the GW says;
