Crocus, Hyacinth and Tulip growth!

OMG i'm going to pee my pants. I have crocus, tulip and hyacinth peeking out of their containers and the beds where I planted them. I know to treat them as annuals and I'm cool with that, just so freaking excited to see them growing. I even have a peony that is coming up; HOW EXCITING it would be if they grew and bloomed!

All of those will grow and bloom since they probably had chilling requirements that were fulfilled before you bought them. Keep us posted on the progress.

Well i kept them in the fridge for like 3 months, as i wasn't sure if they had been or not. I also didn't know if 3 months was too long, but we will find out. I am bursting and hope to post pics in a month or so!

I donÂt know. I planted the Cream Beauty in the fall of 07. When I planted that year I covered everything with rocks to foil the squirrels and I think 80% of what I planted must have rotted. The Cream Beauty is the only thing that came up, except for 2 (only 2!) Tricolor in another bed. So that mean it overlaps at least with Tricolor. Last fall (08) I planted a lot more and covered them with mesh. Those were a species crocus assortment. Since it is their first year they are coming up later. I looked today and only 3-4 buds on those are showing: and it looks like those will be yellow. (I never would have noticed that one color bloomed earlier if you hadnÂt mentioned it!) I planted Ruby Giant too in another bed (those are crocus tommasianus, which supposedly squirrels donÂt eat) and did not use mesh to cover them. So either they are very late bloomers, or the squirrels couldnÂt read and ate them anyway.

I compost, but due to allergies to molds, can't do the turning, etc that dedicated hot composters do. I do just what Floral does - dump garden debris that isn't diseased and kitchen scraps onto the pile which is neatly contained by a fence. After a couple of years, I pull out the finished compost and spread it with no issues as the molds aren't active by then - literally no other work involved. For us, it's far less work than hauling to the town transfer station and enriches soil in a way that doesn't create issues with excess nutrients in ground water and surface water in the way that water soluble fertilizers can since the organic matter in compost will hold onto nutrients until used by the plants. In many parts of the US much of the water pollution is from non-point sources such as overuse of fertilizers by agriculture and homeowners. Unless a soil test tells you that nutrients are lacking in your soil or you are planting in pots, adding fertilizers will be worse than useless since in many soils, the excess nutrients wash into either into the groundwater or into the storm sewers and from there into the nearest body of water. I think here in the US companies like Scotts have miseducated us to think that plants won't do well without fertilizer, but IME gardening in two different states and 5 gardens over more than 40 years, I've rarely used fertilizers, just compost and shredded wood mulch. I do use lime or ashes in my current acidic soil to raise the pH for veggies, but that isn't fertilizer. Posie is right on the money as far as why to use mulch.

I'm on the coast and so far not much signs of any bulbs. The only placeIi see any are the garden right up against my house where the sun shines most of the day.. My gardens are still snow covered. But most springs the bulbs are all showing around this time of the year. I never have any problems with the cold nights they always do fine..

dug from semi frozen soil.. they are DORMANT ... what you see is fall growth ... they are dormant ... your goal is to keep them dormant ... a warm garage.. might trigger growth ... and if they then refreeze.. they might fail ... the sooner the better on replanting ... but a few days shouldnt matter if they stay cold ... you could probably just throw a plastic grocery bag in a snow bank to hold them over ... i dont know how many you have ... dig a 6 inch hole ... a few feet in each direction ... and just shove them all together ... and move them in fall... or better.. when they go dormant in mid summer .... this is not the time of year.. to try for design nor individual placement ... asap would be better .. a few days delay is ok... IF YOU KEEP THEM DORMANT ... i dont know what kind of hyacinths ... large flowers... 4 to 6 inches deep... small types more shallow.. generally 3 times the bulb size ... ken

I am excited for you. In my garden flower bed (s) I have close to the same things popping up. I did not put in the refrigerator so I am excited when you will be able to post photos. I have many irises that have been getting thick stocks. I still have more irises that I purchased from Facebook that I was not able to plant into my yard before the weather changed but they are in the coolness of my shed. I also have to purchase more metal stakes as this is the year I decided to mark all the irises with their proper plant names. Good Luck to you.

So great to read about the progress and joys of a newbie gardener! We'll be looking forward to the pics.

Hyacinths are my favorite and the scent is so pretty.

I have daffodils that are showing a bit. Some tulip bulbs I had forced are looking great! My hyacinths aren't popping out of the ground yet, but should be soon. I am so excited for some winter blooms. My pansies look pretty and so do my cyclamen. I just discovered cyclamen for the first time this fall.

Love my cyclamen, my 1st time too. I planted mine next to my house and the rain runs off my roof ripping them to shreds, I will have to move them. My pansies are great too, but tired of deadheading them :(

1st Hyacinth is blooming, pretty pink smelllllllls soooooooooo gooooood! Funny that crocus haven't put out a flower yet, but everything is above the soil getting ready to say SPRING IS HERE!

I don't know where you are, but the hyacinths come back for me. They just never look as good as they did the first year.
