Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Glauca Pendula' or 'Graceful Grace'

Hi and Happy New Year! I am trying to decide between Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Glauca Pendula' or 'Graceful Grace' for spring planting. I have read the specs and found pictures online and they both are beautiful. Just wondering if anyone has a preference for one or the other. I have just the right spot/space for one of them. Thanks kindly.

Graceful Grace will grow wonderfully in Northern IL whereas most all Douglas firs struggle immensely due to our humidity (both needle disease and stunted growth).

And I have this whole fenced in area in the back of my small yard where I should be growing vegetables, but there are all of these conifers.... The "Rochester Pendula" thus goes on my list.... Barb - you are getting some nice trees! You will like that 'Horstmann's Silberlocke;' it does need some protection from our intense afternoon sun (at least that has been my experience) but it seems to like it here; mine has been doing fine for over two years now (I got my tree from Timberline Gardens in Arvada.) I like Forest Farm but sometimes buying from Oregon nurseries you end up getting plants that expect to have warmer winter conditions and a lot more moisture than we do here in Colorado. I went looking for bamboos there one year; the guys at the nursery laughed at me when I said I was looking for bamboos that could survive in Zone 5! I hope you let us know how the concolors do. You have 2 acres to grow things on! Oh what I could do with that amount of land! (Probably end up in the poor house....) By the way, Dax, ken and Nate are the enablers, not me - they just lead me astray, and I am apparently all too willing to be led! :-D Holly

Dax, the one I bought is contorted, so it wont be exactly an upright. I'm hoping it will be an interesting component of my garden. I'm excited about it. Trying to decide what to pair it with. We got her in the ground today. What a great way to spend Easter----getting a sunburn in the garden. :-)

Gosh, where is Salicaceae, hairmetal, etc? Is this forum slowly dying? I think provided the USDA zone was suitable, yes the hardier one (probably. P. sinensis) would be able to grow in most of Texas. Summer heat appears to not be a problem. However, a lack of H2O molecules and possible H+ ions could be a big problem in the long run. They come from monsoon climate where each summer month has at least 6" of rain. But hey, over on the fruit forum there's a dude in west TX who adds sulfuric acid (and plenty of H2O at times, too) to his super-alkaline soil to grow blueberries. So, where there's a will there's a way! Might make more sense to to find something a little more drought tolerant though. Scotjute (sp?) a poster here might have recommendations. I bet some of the heat tolerant firs like Abies cephalonica would be a better choice for your area if you want that look. Make sure it is an own-root seedling, though. The Asian Pseudostuga make more sense around Houston, etc. NB based on my experience last winter even P. sinensis is not quite fully zn 7 hardy. Although I said above that it only had burning near the snowline, in fact, some of the branches on the top of the plant appeared partially killed because they didn't sprout normally. The Sequoia semprevirens were slightly more visibly damaged by the cold, BUT, recovered faster over the year. Could be their hexaploid powers at work! LOL. the green one will thrive.. but the blue one wont???? ... isnt that what it boils down to?????

i was going to say its a color choice ... but i dont live in IN ..

both do fine just south of ann arbor ... near adrian ...

Maybe your sand helps a lot Ken, seriously! (at least temporarily - many more years than folks with humidity and humus rich soils will have healthy specimens) but there will come a day that the humidity will win in your sand pit as well. The native climates don't match is the key issue.

Douglas fir is prone to needle diseases (big-time) as are most of the native Colorado conifers. Picea pungens will thrive for only so long here. Pinus reflexa (sold as flexilis) also has it's time limit. I'm sure aristata will fall in the same category as will Pinus monophylla or Pinus edulis; Heck maybe even engelmann spruce...

And whatever else I may be missing.

This is all good info, I don't have experience with growing Douglas Fir. The mature conifers on our property (planted 30+ years ago by the original owners) are blue spruce and norway spruce. We're 40-some miles west of Chicago between St. Charles and Dekalb, it definitely gets super hot and humid here. Probably located not too far from you Dax. Glad for the warmer weather today!

why would one thrive.. and one not.. or is this the left and right side of the mountains thing???? ... east and west ???

it cant be blue vs green ...'Graceful Grace' is based upon two long-established specimens growing on an eastern property. Stock I have seen here has been grayish in color, also when I saw pictures of the two "original"* ones these were grayish in aspect.

*As there was a matching pair apparently it was planted as a clone on that site, implying it had been named and distributed before being propagated as 'Graceful Grace'
