Is my Zone 7 too hot to grow Larix?
Comments (32)Drumroll, please... You have to remember I have been emailing people about plants for over 15 years now. There are a lot of people in my address book. I emailed Robert Redmon and he says UAH still has _3_, and the largest is 20 ft. tall and is coning! I just noticed something interesting about the MOBOT trees. Notice the only ones still alive were directly from Japanese scions or seed. This could confirm my suspicion that part of the problem is most seed stocks in the US have inbreeding depression because they came via a few trees in western Europe. BTW - I last emailed him in the late 1990s, but also via gardenweb. I think he used to participate here. The funny thing is I can't even remember what my user ID was back then. I started reusing gardenweb with this account when I lived near Rt. 28 in Fairfax Co. (That was my 2nd garden after my parents sold their house) He bravely tried a few experimental things there that people said wouldn't grow well in Alabama. Well, this proves sometimes those people are wrong. Although I don't know that anyone told him Larix wouldn't grow. BTW - no, I hadn't clicked on the link! It just said Trees. But by the time I posted what I posted in response to Betsy, I had already emailed Mr. Redmon. This post was edited by davidrt28 on Thu, Apr 24, 14 at 17:19...See Moredouglas fir in the south
Comments (16)Quite a few years ago, perhaps more than 10, I was shocked to see an oddly "boreal" looking conifer near Tyson's Corner Mall in Virginia. On examining the cones I was sure it was a douglas fir, because of the distinctive look. It had an open conical form, somewhat like the picture of the tree above. Not quite as tall, maybe only 20', but healthy looking. I kept thinking I'd look for it again, but, seriously, malls are maddening enough just trying to shop at them, I'm certainly not going to search for a tree on its grounds. Also that mall has had so much work done it could very well be gone. It was planted on a steep bank, which might explain why it hadn't died of summer drowning, which I suspect is a probably cause of death for them....See MorePicea chihuahuana & Abies numidica too late?
Comments (16)After I started the heat tolerant conifers thread I started looking around for Piceas and Abies. I considered ordering from forestfarm but was worried that they'd be too small for the price. I did order an Abies Cilicia, Abies Marocana, and a Picea Wilsonii from Stanley and Sons which will be shipped Monday. On a side note I also ordered a Pseudotsuga Sinensis and Wilsoniana, and Tsuga Sieboldii and Tsuga Yunnanensis. I just recieved a Taiwania that I ordered Friday so later I will post some pictures of those conifers after I recieve them....See MoreNew conifers need advice for winter
Comments (5)i am sure you didn't get that bunch from a non-professional ... so i would presume that they were shipped at the appropriate time for planting ,..... ergo .. do so ... if there is any guarantee involved from the seller ... do what they told you to do with them ... if there is any confusion in that regard .... contact them .... they are not greenhouse plants... nor are they indoor plants .... do NOT treat them as such .... keep them well watered for the next year .... but being conifers... they most likely are not swamp plants .. so let them dry between waterings... below is a link about watering in winter .... you dont mention your soil type ..... but most of us do NOT recommend amending the soil on planting .... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: winter water...See MoreSmivies (Ontario - 5b)
