Hi guys,

My neighbor has this beautiful tree right on the ocean and since it's doing so well for her I would love to grow one too. Any ideas what it is? It's about 25ft tall.
I have more close up pictures if that would help.

Awwwww, c'mon Ken, those trees look fine, ==>>. didnt say they did not ... what i brought up.. is the difference between removing a 30 foot tree .. and a 60 foot tree ... one job might have no impact on the landscape and cost say.. 500 bucks ... the other might involve cranes and thousands of dollars .. regardless .... there is no reason not to think about.. and plan for the next decade .. the future ... i used to remove trees.. in the last season i could do it myself.. with my chainsaw ... and that usually involved when i could still make it fall down ... and not crush a bunch of other stuff ... its a variable and an option that should be discussed.. or thought of ... not just ignored ... ken

some of the threadleaf chams can get HUGE .... to the point where a little pruning is not going to keep them small ... so if you are looking for a small thing.. make sure you find the right cultivar ... just look at the pix below .... and be sure you understand .. that conifers are trees .. and they will never stop growing ... so even tiny ones can have big potential, over the decades ... note in your pic ... how poorly sited the plant is ... with no concept that even with pruning ... its going to be growing onto what looks like the side of the house ... it would have been better planted at 3 to 5 feet from the house .... ken https://duckduckgo.com/?q=golden+thread+leaf+chamaecyparis&t=ffcm&iar=images&iax=1&ia=images

Looks like Picea Omorika, but my experience is that they are much more vigourous than what you are seeing. For $7, I doubt that it is grafted. I assume that the seedling is straight Omorika and is just taking it's lovely time. they are beautiful trees and in 10 years it will be way bigger than that spot will allow.

Might be one like Thuja plicata 'Stoneham Gold'. Or perhaps T. p. 'Collyer's Gold'. You still aren't really getting close enough with the camera to make out much detail, but enough can be seen at this point to think it might be a cultivar such as these two.

i cant tell if its a juniper or a thuja ...

but either can be rooted ... one sure way to get an exact match ... if you have a couple decades ... lol ... [and now is the time to do it ....]

one problem with the thuja.. is winter coloration can throw off ID ... sunkist and yellow ribbons come to mind.. but that is just wild guessing... not to mention ... holmstup yellow ....

we need a close up of the foliage ... to get you in the ballpark ...

if its a juniper.. which i doubt.. i have no further clue ... lol

hmmm, maybe some kind of Chamaecyparis? Just a wild guess.

Given the paucity of data-a too-distant pic and no idea where OP lives, I'd say it could just as well be any one of a large number of Thuja occidentalis cultivars, in typical winter dress.

Yup, Maine it is. I saw that a little too late. Still most likely T. occidentalis, of some or other variety, or perhaps straight species, given the Maine locale.

Hi,

Yeah, Im near Boothbay, Maine.

You dont see evergreens in these colors around here, especially ones this large.
I will see if I can get a close up.

plants with this coloration are not at all rare ... and can be had.. mail order for rather cheap ...

any of the names listed.... will give you that color combo ...

and i wouldnt be surprised if you might not find a version at bigboxstore.. once in a while ...

there are some great collection and collectors up your way ... there is a whole world of conifers.. that would probably blow your sox off ... and get this... its one of the few plants.. that can be looked at.. in maine.. in winter.. lol ...

start a new post... if you want a list of nearby arboretums .. and give a big city name ... i am sure some of our east coast peeps would know ...

Any Thuja occidentalis will grow just as well for you. Choose a cultivar and you are on your way.
