Planting Dawn Redwood in Dry Zone 5 Location?
Comments (7)they are treated no different than any other tree in my dry sand ... i would say they TOLERATE wet.. more than your comment of LIKING wet ... as always.. such comments.. are about fully established trees ... and where they plant themselves.. we really walk a fine line.. due the the issues of transplant.. where we mess it all up ... and you understand.. a transplant that size.. can not dry out for about two years .... afterward.. once established .. they should be able to handle it... you know about planting in bad clay??? we have given you that planting guide .. yes???? my 12 year.. planted as a 6 footer.. is .. w/o a scale.. 1/3 to 1/2 less than the picture .... at 20 feet i wouldnt worry about any tree lifting pavement ... they go in the dumpster if you dont buy them ... they do lose their needles.. nudey in winter.. which is cool .. my problem with them .. well i only have one left.. is/was early sprouting.. in z5 MI.. followed by frost/freeze ... once a year.. they can cope .... but one bad year.. it happened twice .. so bud.. hard frost ... die-back of new growth .. rebud .. hard frost/freeze ... dead ... but i think it may have old historical problems hold the receipt.. go for it ... what do you have to lose ... ken...See MoreDawn Redwood heaving sidewalk.
Comments (6)hmmm.. what you read about transplanting conifers is old school.. and not really relevant ... is it really your sidewalk .... or the cities??? welcome to GW!!!! is the tree really yours.. or is it in .. whats that new term i keep forgetting ... tree lawn .. the space between the walk and the road??? ... in other words.. is it yours or the cities ... only an idiot government.. would fix the road.. and leave the tree... whats that all about .. and how much of the root mass did they kill redoing the road ??? .. and if you cant answer that issue.. i dont know how you can go.. willy nilly.. cutting roots off the other side ... perhaps you will be down to praying that there is anything left to hold that monster up ..... is your house in any danger ... should the road repair kill this thing in the future .... and start to fall toward your property ???? .. if its not your tree.. and its in the cities easement.. i would be calling the city.. and asking them what they are going to do about the liability .. rather than spending my hard earned money fixing THEIR problem .... most likely .. based simply on what you say.. w/o the benefit of pix... and lacking a lot of hard info.. i would get rid of them .. or better yet.. have the city get rid of them ....... or ask the city for liability insurance to cover your future potential loss ... come back often... ken...See MoreOdds on Dawn Redwood Needle Damage?
Comments (4)well.. if you already see damage.. then i guess the odds are high ... that you will have damage .... beyond that.. i dont know what you want us to tell you ... mother nature is a cruel mistress ... keep your fingers crossed.. make a sacrifice to the pagan dawn redwood gods.. and good luck .... i had one.. that for 5 years straight .... got blasted.. twice a spring by frost/freeze [completely denuded of growth] .... and grew bigger than its twin sister [which never frosted].. 6 feet higher on the hill ... then the main trunk died at 3 feet ..... no clue if related to frost issues ... and its still bigger than the other from new growth .... if plain old.. plain old... [not some foo foo cultivar derivative] .... you are going to have a hard time killing the thing ... and a little cold weather isnt going to do much to it ... other than make it not look pretty soon enough in spring ... ken...See MoreDawn Redwoods w/ dark brown areas
Comments (12)Thanks for the replies, all. Here is a bit more information based on your questions and comments. Very wet spring ... relatively cool summer ... is heating up now, but the brown areas occurred before that. Foliage doesn't seem thin, but I agree that there are quite a few curled needles, which I don't think is typical. (As you can tell, I know nothing about this stuff.) I don't know what borer damage would look like, but just gaging from the words, I don't think so, because I don't see any unusual damage on the stems and trunks. My lawn guy is using standard stuff on the grass, and he did spray for Japanese Beetles. I'm not sure what he used. I sprayed them myself last year several times using standard Ortho stuff and didn't have any issues, but maybe he's using something that might cause an issue. I will check with him. I took a few more pics ... the one below is of one of the trees. You can see the brown spots, but overall they don't look too bad. I noticed the spots when I was looking down on them from the deck one evening. I will do a search and see if I have a county extension agent. Thanks again!...See MoreMike McGarvey
