I Need a 'Professional' AV Growing in Fort Laud.
Comments (17)Hi peoples! First off, I never intended to hijack the thread. I'm learning alot, and even maintaining my sense of humor with the maternal concerns that go along with any new hobby and the learning curve, lol. Barbara, thanks for the welcome to the AV forum. I'll be starting my own thread shortly, so as to monitor the responses, if that's ok. I'll try to not duplicate the same questions, so you kind folks don't feel put off for having to retype the same info ad nauseum, lol. Wow, that's a long stint in the San Juans! I am so glad to have had the year and a half I lived in WA. First we lived in Anacortes, had a house, with our boat in Olympia. Then DH changed jobs and we moved up to the San Juans, in Anacortes. One of the many high points of my time there was cruising past Orcas Island and ending up in a pod of Orca Whales! One breached (?) alongside our 30 foot boat with that awesome big eye staring me in the face! It was only a few months later we got a bigger boat, lololol. Another of the fun times was living next to Kenny G in Friday Harbor for a weekend. I absolutely loved Friday Harbor!! Now then, Vall3fam, you have me rolling on the floor in stitches this morning! What a wild sense of humor you have. I'm afraid your prices are a bit steep for me, though I'm sure you are well worth it! Maybe I can interest you in some a weekend onboard, in the master cabin with your own lexan hatch, with a view of the mast, moon, stars. Then hang a line over the transom and see what we can catch for dinner. Or perhaps next morning a sunrise cruise with champagne and orange juice mimosas, bagels and cream cheese, fresh air with a gentle breeze, beautiful palm trees for scenery... All this for maybe an hour or two of the two of us playing in the dirt with my baby mini AVs?! I realize you are in CA in a beautiful climate and don't need to come here for our sunshine and balmy winter weather, but if I could twist your potting arm just a little....hee hee. Fondly, Girlsaylor...See MoreNew to AVs and need help
Comments (18)Steve - I am sorry, I didn't want to imply that you do not know what minis are.I am sure you know. I copied this info just for reference. What I was saying - is the way the industry grows the plants for WM - is to grow a young plant in a very controlled environment very fast, force them all to first bloom at the same moment and sell them now. They are immature plants, plus they are jeopardised by this forcing - I presume by temperature and hi phosphorus fertilizer - that's why they have trouble adjusting afterwards. Whatever is sold in 4 inch pots - they are all standards, I am quite sure. At the same time they sell small pots (2 1/4") with minis and semis - I bought Rob's Boondoggle in Lowe's once - but again - you never know without a label - but the bloom on this variety is quite typical. Another thing I would look for - is the size of the leaf. Even if it is a young plant - the leaves on standards are ... standard size. Since WM is not known to be a super nursery - I think they can actually stick any plant into any pot and believe that it is all cabbage and roses. So - let's not argue about what they sell - they themselves do not know... Again - my apologies irina...See MoreFriend's AV on the way out
Comments (1)Watering should be done on the side of the leaves or from the bottom. When you water the crown, it will rot out. Always use WARM water. Cold water will spot the leaves. Take a healthy leaf and plant it. Hopefully you will get babies in 3 months or so. Fertilizer may help the situation unless the crown is rotting. 1/4 teaspoon in a gallon of warm water. Use this each time you water for four or five weeks. Then water from the tap with clear warm water. Indirect light is perfect for AVs. Do not move it to a shadier spot. A plastic bag placed over pot and all will add humidity which may help. The main thing is to water correctly and not over the crown. No mulching is necessary. You want water to drain out freely, not to remain and mulch may make it stay in the pot too long which would rot the roots. Nancy...See MoreNew AeroGrow Wtih LED lights. To Grow AV Babies?
Comments (10)Sorry, been busy with Christmas. I just kept searching the internet for blogs of many different people, putting in keywords, like aerogarden, (couldn't find as much as I thought I would) african violets in aerogardens, etc. Alot of them started growing them and posted pictures, but didn't follow through and tell you how it was going a few months later or whatever. Most just said the leaves failed. One lady's husband built her a homemade one, big flat of growing spaces with holes, water underneath, pumps, aeration, LED grow lights panel, etc. She didn't report alot of success either. I can't remember the blogger now, and she dwindled off and stopped writing too. I seem to remember she mainly went with other plants. I think my biggest worry, I guess, is there isn't much space. I want to grow more than a few leaves. Lol. But we can start out small and see how it goes. Please let me know how it goes for you. In theory, it should be so much quicker, no waiting forever for those little mouse ears. Ha! I think, if you cut the grow sponge like you said, then even score it some for roots to be able to break out the sides easier might help. I was thinking you'd have to plant it about the time the plantlets start showing so they get light, but they grow under water if started in a glass, but they do get light. Quite a dilemma to think about, as you said the light is the main factor in their growing so quickly. The Aerogrow tries to keep that light away from the water to keep algae down, so it sure won't reach the plantlets Hmmmm......See MoreUser
