Caldwell Pink Behaving Oddly
Comments (2)Caldwell Pink is actually a synonym for the China rose Pink Pet. It was the study name assigned to a "found" rose before that rose was identified as Pink Pet. Pink Pet comes in two forms, a relatively low growing shrub (2-3 ft.) and a taller version called Climbing Pink Pet that is somewhere between 5 and 10 ft. The climber is a sport of the bush form. It is entirely possible you have the climbing version and it is beginning to revert to the bush form. I have the climbing form and mine hasn't acted like yours yet, but it isn't quite 5 years old yet. I'll keep an eye on it to see if mine starts doing the same thing in a couple of years....See MoreIs this Caldwell Pink/Pink Pet?
Comments (2)Good idea sherryaustin but the flowers seem larger and not as double as The Fairy. Also the clusters are not nearly as dense as The Fairy. There are thorns but not many, mainly on the older growth. I was also thinking 'Old Blush'- foliage looks just like it and so do the flowers....See MorePink Pet/Caldwell Pink
Comments (15)Jackie, I have a bed of 5 Caldwell Pink roses. I think they are beautiful, and when they are in full bloom, they are especially beautiful. Michael Shoup at Antique Rose Emporium found it, and named it. However, the ARS says it is Pink Pet. Therefore, if we take the blooms to a rose society function, we are require to call it Pink Pet. In my opinion if I purchase it with one name, I do not feel good about calling it something else. I like to repeat a rose in a bed. I have also done this with Perle d'Or (I don't want to get up, and look up the exact spelling). Your blooms are lovely. Our zone is 7A, a perfect zone for this rose. Your blooms are lovely. Comments (16)junco - Hmmm...I looked up 'Cl Caldwell Pink' (aka "Pink Pet") on HMF and it says it blooms "continuously and perpetually". Rose Petals Nursery also says it is a re-bloomer. How long have you had yours? Sometimes climbing roses need to climb first, before they settle down to blooming a lot. This can take 2-3 years. It would be a shame to get rid of it if the only problem is that it is too young. The "octopus arms" you mention are new climbing canes - to be celebrated! If you keep the rose don't cut them off - just train them on some sort of support, preferably as horizontally as you can. This will stimulate them to produce blooming laterals. Climbing roses take more time to get going than bush roses - CP is such a wonderful rose, I would keep it and see what happens, if it were mine. Jackie...See Morems. violet grey
