Dealing with possible rose canker
Comments (19)I prefer the Lysol 3 in 1 cleaner. You can dilute it or use it full strength right out of the bottle according to the label. It won't pit and corrode your shears like bleach, and it has very effective bactercides and virucides. Ideally, you would soak your pruners at least 3 minutes between cuts. Don't leave your pruners soaking longer than 10 minutes: take them out and dry them in the sun. I pour the Lysol solution (I dilute it 4 or 5 to l) into a plastic takeout quart container and cut an X through the top. The containers always tip and spill in the garden. Did you happen to prune in the rain or shortly before rain? Rain and wind can spread around water-borne pathogens. There's old fruit tree advice against pruning in the rain, and I now take it very seriously....See MoreRose Canker? What do I do?
Comments (5)That rose lady must have been thinking all her roses get this problem and so just cut out the dead canes and the rose will grow more canes. But, when all the canes are gone, you have a problem. You should not have allowed her to prune them. You should prep the soil before you plant, not while you are waiting. Pruning seal means no new grow can come there. If the rose is already infected pruning seal won't stop the infection. Once the fungus has colonized in the wood, there is no way to get that fungus out of the wood, as far as I know. If I am wrong, someone tell me out to get that fungus out of the wooden cane....See MorePlease help me identify rose canker
Comments (8)Thanks elk for getting back to me. It actually spread from the top of the canes on a bare root rose, that I had planted about 1 month ago. I just had to keep pruning more and more off the canes.. I have never seen gall or canker even though I have been growing roses for over 10 years, but that does not mean I never had it. I definitely have thrown out roses that didn't make it for one reason or other. The rose had that parafin stuff they cover the bare root roses in. not only did it not stop with pruning it seemed to become elevated on the cane. Then I noticed there was some growth and swelling on the graft. So you might be right. I have shovel pruned the rose into the garbage bin since I didn't want it to go to the composting bin... Washed the stone pot with clorox.. Would throw it away if it had been plastic but was an expensive pot.... so hopefully cleaning it with clorox and letting it sit in the sun for a couple of days will kill what ever fungal infection it was. Thanks for you help...See MoreOrtho or Bayer Alternatives
Comments (38)I live on the Intracostal in Plam Beach County. The crabs are normally next to the water, but with all the rain I guess they had too much and moved closer to the house. I lost a rose several years ago to one's digging. I have only had this rose in the ground maybe a month or so, I am afraid the air will get into the roots. Last evening there was a 3inch wide hole at least 8 or more inches deep angling right under the plant. I tried to fill it with dirt but kind of hard to do. So I put dirt on top and put more water on t.... just what the poor rose needs with all the rain we have been having. Then I tamped around it hoping I got all the air pockets out. Then this morning there was another hole on the other side of the plant. I repeated water and dirt like last evening then went and found a glue trap and stuck it under the rose..... Hopefully I will have caught a crab by the time I get home....See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
