Comments (2)I've had a 5b winter so far and mine are all still alive. Jelena, Girard's Purple and Arnold's Promise. The fall color on Jelena has been terrible and the other two have been spectacular. These are just early observations over 2 years. The first year I had them we had a 6b winter. I picked up a couple Vernal witch hazels as they are a bit more hardy and color more reliably. Songsparrow has a slew of cultivars including several in various fall color shades....I always thought they go gold but there some that are somewhat orange and others that are red....See Moresource for chinese pistache or witch hazel trees
Comments (1)Hi catbird, we planted a chinese pistache tree last year and really like it. It has grown almost two feet since we planted it. Last fall the foliage was just beautiful turning various shades of red and bronze. From what I learned about them, they do not get extremely large and are not messy trees. Both of those things were important to us because we planted it near our fish pond. The one we got came from Hanna's Garden Shop on Hwy. 280 in B'ham. They can look quite scraggly at the nursery but they flush out quickly....See MoreVernal Witch Hazel vs. Carolina Allspice
Comments (1)I have both shrubs and have been severely dissapointed w/the Vernal Witchhazel. I've moved it twice b/c it never seems to bloom-or does so very lack lusterly. Mine is in mostly sun until the canopy trees fill in. Its also a very slow grower. I am however loving the Allspice!!! My allspice gets a great deal of shade, but has bloomed very nicely. The shape is very attractive and has grown a great deal. I plan on adding a few more b/c I am so impressed with it. Its form can be seen from far away b/c of the leaf structure. The allspice is fragrant, although I've found you have to rub against it or crush a leave to get its scent. Perhaps closer to your deck it would be more fragrant. The Vernal witch hazel would look better in a woodland, less manicured garden. I don't think its a speciment plant... Neither is impressive in the fall or winter, IMO. Good luck!...See Moreakamainegrower
