I have just finished reading this wonderful novel by Australian author Marion Halligan, it is very french, not unlike 'The Elegance of The Hedgehog', only for me much better. It caught my eye by chance at my local library as the cover is identical to Hedgehog!! so strange,I had to do a double-take!!

It was written 2009, I hope that it is available world wide!!

A special read I am sure you will find.

Hello JuneK !

Off-and-on for the past 2 years I've been looking for some wonderful Australian writer, but not ones from the past. Have never been to your strange and beautiful country -- but am fascinated by it! The book you describe sounds really intriguing, and I'll look for it.

Have just checked Amazon -- they have a TON of her books ... including the one you describe. A few about Paris, and the rest seem to take place in Australia. The reviewers' critiques (Amazon) on "Valley of Grace" are rapturous. The story line sounds like a mystery -- something about finding family artifacts in an attic in newly-bought house in Paris suburb.

Anyway, I will definitely try this one out. (I'd do it now, but yesterday I ordered two other books - a Ruth Rendell and a Barbara Vine.) Thanks for the tip!

Hi laura m, I am sure that you will enjoy VOG, this writer is one that I shall follow up, she has won sooo many awards and is new to me. Yes the mystery in the attic is something special!! I like your wording "Rapturous" in describing this novel

I have discovered two new Australian writers this last year and really enjoyed their books.

Andrea Mayes - The Rose Notes and Shearwater.
(I would love to hear from you if you read Rose Notes.)

Alison Booth -Stillwater.

All very Australian in locations.

Good Evening/Morning Book junkies, I have not been around for a few days...thought I would check in on the book swap and happenings. Speaking of "Goodwill" and books.....I chuckle (just a little) when I think of a lovely, classy lady who had many books....many, many books. She kept them in boxes around her home. She always said that one day she would donate them. But for the time being they would stay put as she often would read them again. I offered to take them to Goodwill and she would always say no. In fact, she did not want anyone even looking through the boxes of books. Her husband got to the point that he could not stand it anymore....boxes of books everywhere. While his wife was gone one day, he took several of the large boxes of books to Goodwill for donation (yes, without telling her). When his wife returned home, she noticed that many of her beloved boxes of books were no longer "home". She became very upset and I mean very upset!!! She screamed and yelled and ranted and raved and called her husband every name in the book....I know because I was their. She was one pissed off woman. I did not blame her, especially after I heard why she was really so ticked off. Yes, she loved her romantic novels, mysteries, best sellers and biographies. But in her beloved books in so many boxes, she had hidden money to the sweet tune of $15,000. One book had $100, another book had $300, and so on. After she told her husband of the money that HE GAVE AWAY, I think he nearly died. He never touched one of her books again. To this day when I pick up a used book at a garage sale or donation facility, I page though it. You just never know what you might find in a book...a good mystery, lots of tears, laughter, romance and escape or.....a few bucks!!! Let me fetch the closest book. Page 56, sentence 5....... "Many pieces require highly intricate finishing touches and their tiniest details must be treated almost microscopiclly". Off to watch the news! Happy Wednesday! Annie previous 313 + 18 = 331 books

Most fragrant HT whites

Thankfully there are a couple of terrific new white hybrid teas to add to this list, that have been released since that last post. Amazing Grace '07 is a fantastic HT, bred by our very own Bruce Chapman. Superbly formed with high pointed spiral blooms and the whitest of white colour. Also has a very nice fragrance. I have a couple of them and am really looking forward to them being fully grown, as they're apparently very prolific. Really love this rose. Form second to probably only Tineke (for white HT's) and fragrance second to probably only Full Sail (for white HT's). And just released this year, Pope John Paul 2 is another outstanding white HT, which many regard as the best white HT of all time. I've been reading rave reviews of it from the US for a while and now I'm seeing rave reviews of it from here. At the annual rose trials in Adelaide last October, it dominated, winning the Gold Medal, Marion de Boehme Memorial Award (Best Rose in Trial), Hamilton Gardens New Zealand Perpetual Trophy (Best Hybrid Tea) and Governor of Gifu Japan Award (Most Fragrant Rose). It's renowned for its beautiful show form, strong "lemon" fragrance and the productivity and health of the bush. Was very tempted to buy one when I saw a batch of them at the local Bunnings the other day, but they are just babies and are very expensive, so I think I'll wait till they're available at better value. As for the other top fragrant HT's, my other favs are Full Sail (pure white sport of Aotearoa, which I just found out is a parent of Amazing Grace '07) and Memoire, which is a very well formed and large, full petaled, moderately fragrant Kordes rose. Thank you for the kind thoughts-Christmas was bittersweet at times, and there were some group tears moments-but over all it was fun-DD and DS-in-L were in from the West Coast and we enjoyed our half of their visit. After an autumn of comfort rereading, I am moving on-first I read Sister Queens by Julia Fox-a tandem biography of Catherine of Aragon (1st wife of Henry VIII) and Juana of Castile, queen of Aragon and Castile in her own right and mother of a Holy Roman Emperor. Interesting parallels even though they met only once after Catherine left for England at age 16. Now I am treating myself with Miss Buncle's Book by D.E. Stevenson. Charming, light, a bonbon. Work has started up again-deadline on the 3rd-so reading time will become slim and precious. For BookClub in January we will be reading Killing Lincoln

Thank you for the recommendations. I've put all 3 on a computer list so I can look them up easily.

BTW: Here in New York City the news shows are reporting -- & showing pictures of --- HUGE flooding in Queensland. How is that doing now?

We've had very weird weather, too -- the biggest snow blizzard in a century (or something close to) happened Xmas weekend -- 12" to 19" (inches) of snow IN ONE NIGHT ... good reading weather!

Hi laura m,
The rivers are still rising in Queensland, major towns are isolated, it is heartbreaking to see the damage that the flooded rivers have caused.

I live on the far South Coast of New South Wales and we have no problems.

Good to hear that your area is doing fine. Yes, in U.S., as in many parts of Europe, there've been many enormous river floods in past 10 years, or so. And of course we all know about the BP Oil spill !! To give you an idea of how far-reaching the damage from that is -- My local inidividually-owned supermarket has posted a sign :
"We are not selling crabs from the Gulf Coast now -- or any other fish from that area. Are we upset about this? We own property down there for our NY fish supply ... You better believe we're upset about this!!"
