Happy New Year

Another year gone and I offer the traditional poem from Tennyson's 'In Memoriam' which he wrote in High Beach Churchyard please open the link and do enlarge ALL the photos.

Perhaps 2007 will be the year when we see at least some of the sentiments here reflected in our weary world.

Love to all

Ring Out, Wild Bells

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,

The flying cloud, the frosty light;

The year is dying in the night;

Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,

Ring, happy bells, across the snow:

The year is going, let him go;

Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,

For those that here we see no more,

Ring out the feud of rich and poor,

Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,

And ancient forms of party strife;

Ring in the nobler modes of life,

A peaceful New Year would be a wondeful thing.

Thank you for the Tennyson. I don't think I've ever read it right through before. It's so good, moving and uplifting.

A Happy and peaceful New Year to everyone. I've put up another Hardy poem - written not just at and about a New Year, but a new century - the twentieth. It's a typical Hardy odd take on 'hope''

The Darkling Thrush

by Thomas Hardy

I leant upon a coppice gate,
When Frost was spectre-gray,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled vine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.

The Century's corpse outleant,

Katy, Logee's is certainly an adventure in itself. I've been going there for years. My first times were when Joy Martin was running it. Even squeezing through the aisles single file is worth it. So many exotic plants growing over, under and around! It's only about a 40 minute ride for me. I don't know of any other greenhouses that have that kind of variety. The botanical center at Roger Williams Park here in Providence is big and interesting. There's a $3 admission though. Lunch afterwards would not be a problem. Providence has tons of great restaurants. Maybe some others here would be interested in one of these or something else. Bill

Happy New Year to you, too! To take more pictures. There really is something to having an annual video diary of the garden. The Juniperus scopulorum I planted as 6 inch seedlings in 09 are now 5 - 6 feet tall. I have an apricot I planted as a 2 ft whip 2 years ago that's now approaching 8 ft. These are wins I should celebrate more! Last night I downloaded a couple of maps of champion tree tours in nearby towns. I plan to visit them over time. I'm hoping that will help me learn to work smarter, not harder by choosing trees that will grow here. And yes, worry less! I think that's on my list every year. Barb

Happy New Year Everyone!

These pictures make me homesick, especially since I rec'd lots & lots of photos yesterday from my good friend in England who spent Christmas at Chatsworth and sent gorgeous pics of it all...sigh....

Thanks Vee - I must find out how to do that!

High Beach (so called because of the sandy soil (and also spelled 'Beech' because of the forest trees) is a favourite ambling place of ours - just 10 minutes away - so it's very special.
Thank you also for The Darkling Thrush = lovely.

...for auld lang syne! (offkey but who cares)

I had a very relaxing day and read The Twentieth Wife, which made me understand, finally, the source and rationale for those Bollywood movies.

The two of us will be enjoying a special home-cooked dinner shortly and I have four DVDs from the library lined up - a very quiet evening, which is the way I prefer New Years Eve.

Every good wish for the New Year! A pleasant 25degC here on New Year's Day in Western Australia. I spent a quiet evening with a couple of American murder mysteries and an imported tin of S'Mores. I often read about them in the American books but never came across them until I spotted this tin in a supermarket's specialty section. (Try saying those three words after a few drinks, Martin!)

We in Hawai'i have a little less than five hours left in 2006, but before I head off to listen to and watch the fireworks I want to wish all RPers a very happy 2007! This is my sixth year of greeting a new year with Reader's Paradise. Wow!

A very Happy New Year to all! The poems are wonderful.

We had a late night at a neighborhood party last night (kids and all), and so are taking it very easy today with football on TV, video games for the kids and (for me) laundry and a very light book.

May the new year bring everyone here health, happiness, and a bounty of books!
