Oh, this is such an old thread... but at least I won't be the only one still posting in it! I was gifted a Sungold and a Brandywine (no idea which version) from a friend years ago, stuck them in a patch I dug out of the front yard... and they were amazing! I haven't been able to bear to eat grocery-store tomatoes since. But the intervening years have been focused on other things; my one attempt at gardening 3 years ago was a failure when I didn't find time to water (or weed) anything for three weeks at the end of June. Anyway, this year I finally have the right mix of time and space so I spent the winter reading up and dreaming, and... well, let's just say my family and local food shelf will have lots of tomatoes in August... Yellow Pygmy Costulato Genovese When I got the two extra varieties from SandHill, I couldn't decide whether to jump up and down for joy (yay, two more flavors to try!) or despair - I spent weeks choosing my list, how could I fit 2 more?? But I decided joy was the right reaction. :) I'm sure it'll be more than a jungle in the yard this summer, but it'll be an edible jungle... and I have never been so grateful for the half-acre lot we have as this year. :) Good thing my husband is here to talk me out of cutting down our trees so I can have even more sunlight... Unfortunately, the cutworms have already been busy - but fortunately, although I only planned to grow 2 plants of each variety, I actually PLANTED 7-10 seeds... and almost all of them came up...and then I couldn't bear to cull since they all looked so healthy... so I ended up with lots of seedlings to give away. :) And to replace cutworm-killed plants. And then to give away some more! And still have replacements on hand in case my popsicle sticks don't do the trick with the cutworms... I'm just lucky Minnesota had an incredibly early and mild spring, my seedlings have been outside since the first week of March (with short breaks inside overnight until April) - there was no way I had enough grow-lights or space in the basement for them all! The seeds that I saved from those unknown Brandywines years ago still germinated three years later, so I'm really hoping to increase my seed from every one of these varieties this summer. Just need to cross my fingers and toes that I can get at least one tomato of each variety to survive and ripen enough to collect their seeds! Watching the cutworm decimation last week made me doubt I'll have luck that good, but hope springs eternal...

The "tape lines" are actually paneling seams. The original walls are aluminum sheets, some previous owner paneled the whole place, and they've been painted a dozen times since. It is interesting that the seams show more with light paint than with dark paint. It seems to be the case with this room as well (at least in photos; don't know if that'll be the case in person). Though not really in this one: As for the front landscaping, the helpful and well-meaning next-door neighbor cleaned out the beds for us during the week while we weren't there, and, well, over-edited a bit. Since he pulled weeds, edged the sidewalk, and fixed some concrete, we couldn't really be mad at him. :-) I did add a small bush to the right of the door and some mums and daylillies in between, though obviously that's not visible in these photos.

Pages, thanks for posting the entire list. Much easier to navigate. I've only read, roughly, 135 of the 1000. Roughly because, frankly, my memory isn't great on some. Several have been read because of the recommendations on this forum. How do we count those we began but couldn't abide and gave up? I didn't count Proust because I only read 20 pages before the hate overwhelmed me. But what if I got half-way through before giving up? In a few cases I thought I'd read all of a writer's oeuvre, but didn't remember the novel listed. I think I read all of Agatha Christie, but I don't remember some of the titles. Also, I noticed that titles were sometimes slightly different from the book I read -- Smilla's Sense of Snow vs. Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow . I'm insulted that publishers pigeonhole us, then remember our discussion about "around" and "round" on the other thread. I guess the publishers do know what they are doing when they change titles to accomodate the market. James Lee Burke is on the list, much to my delight. How silly that I take personally the ranking of a favorite author.

Not only can the HOA fine an owner if short term rentals are prohibited, but the city may as well. In our resort area, a short term rental permit is required and the city tightly controls short term rentals. Code enforcement is good. In addition, if the covenants of subdivision disallow short term rentals, the city will not issue a permit. Our current small subdivision does not allow short term rentals and, in 11 years, I only know of one homeowner (a builder) that violated the covenants when he couldn't sell the newly built house during the bust. We turned a blind eye and didn't complain given the circumstances. It turned out not to be a problem. The nightly rental was very high, which kept the usage down, and the house sold at the end of the season. However, although our little subdivision does not allow short terms, they are allowed in neighboring areas, so we do get some short term rentals nearby and have had a few noise issues. The subdivision where we have bought a lot to build does not allow short term rentals and is, for the most part, geographically protected from surrounding neighborhoods that do by green space. The few lots that do back up to another neighborhood were priced lower and still slower to sell. At the annual meeting of the HOA last year, a realtor proxy moved to amend the covenants to remove the short term rental restrictions. The motion was withdrawn when it became abundantly clear that all owners present bought, at least in part, because of the restriction. In resort areas, most folks (or their realtors) already know that you really need to read your subdivision documents closely for this issue. In fact whether short term rentals are allowed is often disclosed in the listing. Some second homeowners may want to rent out their home to defray the cost of ownership, while others want to be away from the bother. With this new phenomenon in other good-time cities, I would expect that a wise buyer there would also check the subdivision documents carefully and also check in with the city.
