March/April FOTESS Round Robin Poetry Swap!
Q

Evening All! It was the same here, Tuesday, Margo, overcast and windy but the wind wasn't bitterly cold, which was a welcome change. My mini daffs are starting to bloom! The crocuses are still going strong. And I too am still tired. Bummer! I was reading back thro the posts on this thread and way back at the beginning of this swap, I promised to keep the Robin's flight plan posted. You may have noticed, I haven't done that! So here it is, a little late, and I'll try my best to keep it updated! I sent to Peggy in Washington; Peggy sent it on to Heidi in Nebraska; Heidi mailed it on to Annie in California; Annie mailed it to Ruth in Texas; Ruth sent it flying to Melinda in Arkansas; Melinda just sent it to Diane/Moonfire; Diane sends it to Jeanne/sandlapper_rose in South Carolina; Jeanne sends it to Alana/poisondartfrog in Kentucky; Alana sends it to Robin in Virginia; Robin sends it to Vina/flowergirl134 in New York; Vina sends it to Janine/Jaynine in Connecticut; Janine sends it to Suzanne/hibiscusfan in Ohio; Suzanne sends it to Margo/smitties in Ohio; and Margo will send it to Katie in Mississippi, who will send the completed poem back to me! Hope I didn't skip anyone! Have a great day tomorrow! Shirley!

Oh sure, Katie, leave me the hard part! Just kidding! What a beautiful ending, perfect, Katie! I'm adding my part now, so we can all read how the poem fits together. And I'll post again when I get the poem from Katie. And I just want to say: Great job, everyone! Not just with the poem, but you all did an excellent job of keeping the Robin going, in a timely manner, for which I am really thankful! Wasn't quite sure how this would work out, but it turned out far better than I could have hoped for. Thank you all for being such great FOTESSERS! And one more thing, I really enjoyed doing the Robin (and hope you did too), and loved Margo's idea for doing a Round Robin Story. SOOOO, we may borrow another month from Jeanne and do this, maybe in the Fall. Keep it in mind and I would appreciate any imput, ideas or suggestions for a Round Robin Story. And because I didn't have to work very hard to finish up, I thought I would give the Poem it's title: Friends of the Earth's Spring Journey A haze of green and longer days, And lots and lots of rain! Helps nature work behind the scene as sunshine pushes through the grey. Upwards push the tender tulips. Companion of the daffodil So lovely, but I sigh, there are evil weeds to dig, battle them tomorrow, for now a glass of wine. First blooms of Redbud glow pink and bright, under a clear blue canopy in the morning sunlight. As with all God's creations, spring brings forth the beautiful flowers. Which are doubly enhanced by the coming of April's showers. Pollen-nation! Oh the sneezes and the misery; the price we pay for leaves on the trees and a colorful array of bright Spring flowers. Let the rain come back again - the irritants to devour. Descending from cloistered winter aeries, Exclusive silver-winged garden faeries dance in the flower beds among blossoms of yellow, pink and red. Cherry trees blossoming in the sun, give a small taste of bounty yet to come. Days lengthen, the earth grows warmer; summer's just around the corner. Awaiting to see the hummingbirds flight, so majestic, what a delight. How fast and silent its small wings zoom, intending to drink nectar from every bright bloom. Spring has sprung, the blossoms bloomed, Now there are plants to tend. Never fear, SummerâÂÂs almost here; But for Spring, this is THE END! Shirley!

I'm offering an old favorite here, but first must thank everyone for some new favorites. Jankin, who has not felt the emotion so poignantly expressed in the poem by Rainer Maria Rilke? Thanks for posting it; I've never read it before. And I loved the portrait of a happy marriage by Amy Lowell, so beautifully and succinctly distilled. THE ANNIVERSARY. by John Donne ALL kings, and all their favourites, All glory of honours, beauties, wits, The sun it self, which makes time, as they pass, Is elder by a year now than it was When thou and I first one another saw. All other things to their destruction draw, Only our love hath no decay ; This no to-morrow hath, nor yesterday ; Running it never runs from us away, But truly keeps his first, last, everlasting day. Two graves must hide thine and my corse ; If one might, death were no divorce. Alas ! as well as other princes, we "Who prince enough in one another be" Must leave at last in death these eyes and ears, Oft fed with true oaths, and with sweet salt tears ; But souls where nothing dwells but love "All other thoughts being inmates"then shall prove This or a love increasèd there above, When bodies to their graves, souls from their graves remove. And then we shall be throughly blest ; But now no more than all the rest. Here upon earth we're kings, and none but we Can be such kings, nor of such subjects be. Who is so safe as we? where none can do Treason to us, except one of us two. True and false fears let us refrain, Let us love nobly, and live, and add again Years and years unto years, till we attain To write threescore ; this is the second of our reign.

Yes, Dido--I am familiar with that poem and have taught it many times in the past--but strangely enough, had forgotten it. Thank you for reminding me. Impressive imagery. It chokes me up--the old lie! Since we are on anti-war poems, here are a couple more that I used to teach along with Owen. The Jarrell poem--WWII-- leaves us gasping because it is pure horrifying image with no commentary. The shortest and maybe most realistic war poem I know--and a fitting postscript to Owen: "The old Lie: dulce et decorum est/ Pro patria more." The second one--WWI poem--, with its repetitions and wandering, circling thoughts that take us no where but leave us caught in an endlessly pointless repeating maze, also leaves us gasping with its final pointed question--what are "patterns" for? The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner By Randall Jarrell From my mother's sleep I fell into the State, And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze. Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life, I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters. When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose. Patterns By Amy Lowell I walk down the garden paths, And all the daffodils Are blowing, and the bright blue squills. I walk down the patterned garden-paths In my stiff, brocaded gown. With my powdered hair and jewelled fan, I too am a rare Pattern. As I wander down The garden paths. My dress is richly figured, And the train Makes a pink and silver stain On the gravel, and the thrift Of the borders. Just a plate of current fashion, Tripping by in high-heeled, ribboned shoes. Not a softness anywhere about me, Only whalebone and brocade. And I sink on a seat in the shade Of a lime tree. For my passion Wars against the stiff brocade. The daffodils and squills Flutter in the breeze As they please. And I weep; For the lime-tree is in blossom And one small flower has dropped upon my bosom. And the plashing of waterdrops In the marble fountain Comes down the garden-paths. The dripping never stops. Underneath my stiffened gown Is the softness of a woman bathing in a marble basin, A basin in the midst of hedges grown So thick, she cannot see her lover hiding, But she guesses he is near, And the sliding of the water Seems the stroking of a dear Hand upon her. What is Summer in a fine brocaded gown! I should like to see it lying in a heap upon the ground. All the pink and silver crumpled up on the ground. I would be the pink and silver as I ran along the paths, And he would stumble after, Bewildered by my laughter. I should see the sun flashing from his sword-hilt and the buckles on his shoes. I would choose To lead him in a maze along the patterned paths, A bright and laughing maze for my heavy-booted lover, Till he caught me in the shade, And the buttons of his waistcoat bruised my body as he clasped me, Aching, melting, unafraid. ...

I've had a reply - I quote:- "Martin, Sorry about that! They've been doing some maintenance this morning -- I'll report it and it should be fixed soon. Thanks for letting us know. Best, Tamara Amey GardenWeb Community Manager " - only, of course, it was more elegantly laid out than that in the email...!!!

From the posters who post on RP Comes this heartfelt and passionate plea: When you can't do line-breaks, Then your poetry makes A long line which ain't easy to see! Please, please, give us back our line-breaks. It's the one forum that NEEDS it more than any other. Thanks.

Yes, puleeeeeze give us back our line breaks. I was just trying to list a few books and they got crammed together so that an author's name was immediately followed by the title of the next book, and of course, I hadn't entered a comma, and and didn't work, either.

Haven't been back long after a little sojourn and it may be just my imagination but this blessed place seems much less active than it used to be. Heard several people complaining about the ads here and am now confronted with a huge one covering half the posts as I log on. Now no line breaks, can't paste with any separation from the main body of the post and can't italicise or bold. Frustrating. Is this the reason for the apparent slowdown or is that just a figment of my tortured imagination. Larry

JUST PUT A POEM UP ON ANOTHER THREAD. WISH I HADN'T BOTHERED TO DO ALL THE TYPING REQUIRED - IT JUST LOOKS LIKE NOTHING AND IS PROBABLY UNREADABLE, BEARING IN MIND THAT POETRY IS HARD ENOUGH TO READ WITHOUT HAVING WILFUL HANDICAPS THROWN UNDERFOOT! I WON'T PUT UP ANY MORE UNTIL I AM ABSOLUTELY SURE THINGS ARE WORKING PROPERLY AGAIN. WHICH COULD BE NEVER, SO FAR AS I CAN SEE.

Larry-the formatting gremlins are fairly recent- a few days or a week at most. We're just all flat out for the holidays, I think-December usually slows down, but we come roaring back with our Christmas books!

Once upon a time The HTML tags and The line breaks And the lovely indentations Were all stolen by the Gardenweb Gremlins But with a little ingenuity and A lot of experimentation done while we Should have been wrapping presents And baking cookies we tried to defeat them! nope. bummer

The peculiar "and and" in my last post is due to the removal of the formating arrow, i, and slash symbols we were using to make titles appear in italics. Grrrrr!

FWIW, I got the following message back today from Tamara:........... "I know it's very frustrating -- especially on your type of forum! I've checked every day with our tech department and they are still working on it. Because of the holiday, things have been even slower, so I do apologize. I'm hoping to get a better update today. Once again, I'm sorry for the delay, but I'm sure it will be up and running this week." ............. Here's hoping!!

Add me to the list of RPers sending in a request for line breaks, indentations, and HTML tags.....Funny thing I noticed...there seems to be no trouble with the ever-increasing and unbelievably annoying ADS that have shown up.....sigh~~~~~PAM
