FLUDD........have you read it?

Years ago I read FLUDD and recall liking it.

I cannot for the life of me remember the gist of the story today......am I losing it!? ....or has it been stuffed under a heap of book memories since reading it!??

Can someone refresh my memory?!

yoyobon - I am guessing that FLUDD is the shortened form of a book title, but I don't know which book. Could you elucidate? Thanks.

Yvonne, I'm assuming you mean Hilary Mantel's Fludd about the strange fellow who appears in the dreary English village to take up the position as curate, only he might be someone (something) else altogether.

I read it several years ago and don't recall many of the details, but I do remember that it was wickedly witty in parts and also a bit spooky. The eccentric characters -- for one, I think the priest was actually an atheist -- reminded me, as much of Mantel's writing does, of Muriel Spark at her most ironic.

Does that help ring any bells? I wish I could remember more. Maybe I need to read it again. I think it was rather short, unlike some of Mantel's super doorstopper historicals.

Has anyone read "Grow Figs Where You Think You Can't"

You could just ask whatever you need to ask here. There really are only two fig forums with a large member base. This and the one mentioned by Bob. I think the other forum has more members but most of them are also members here. The thing is there are only a few things that can be done to grow figs in northern climates. They involve covering or burying in the winter. Or potting and moving inside in winter. Or using a greenhouse. There are a million and one ways to do each and there is no perfect or best way. Just personal preference. I personally would prefer growing in large pots with one of ALâÂÂs Mixes and then moving them indoors for the winter. But I have a large adult son and a heavy duty hand truck to move them. If someone has a bad back and no large son or large friend a greenhouse is better. If you can afford it. Lots of people bury their trees or wrap/cover them with good results. All of the subjects have been covered in this forum many many times. No real need to go anywhere else. No way would I be buying that book.

Thanks Bestyears! Really!! I haven't read it but of my list, Poisonwood Bible is the most incongruous. However, I will read it although it seems realistically "gritty" from Amazon reviews. I read fast and have a hard time finding books I Iove ..so I'll read a bunch of books I dislike then give up...again and not read new books again until the feeling passes. We don't all have the same tastes in reading, The Kitchen House is beloved but I didn't like it at all ( sorry Sue!) and I really disliked the "letter" aspect of the Guernsey Potato book. It was unsatisfying and annoying. I thought I would like Game of Thrones saga, yet, again, I hated it. Love McCalls #1 Ladies Detective Series.

Those "music" videos are positively puke-worthy! I agree with Terriks, although I do confess to watching several episodes of the NYC bunch. Afterward, I always felt a bit mentally dirty: That was an hour of my life wasted that I could never again get back. Shallow people famous for simply attempting to be famous. Kinda makes me long to be a hermit, and definitely makes me fear for the future of humanity. Anyone see "Idiocracy"? Yeah. We're there.

I gave up my car when I moved to downtown Charleston, so I spend a lot of time just walking and riding my bicycle to get around the city. I used to do yoga and ballet, but thus far have not found any classes here that I can afford. I do enjoy cooking, but do not like to bake, as I seem to have no "sweet tooth." I love to try new dishes. I am in a lively French conversation group that meets weekly; our "leader" is a French native. I also enroll each semester in history classes at the nearby college, which is only 7 minutes away by bicycle. That enables me to utilize the wonderful college library. I enjoy being on campus and talking to the students. When I have free time, I also like to explore on foot the historic neighborhoods of Charleston, and take in the gardens. Day-trips with friends to visit the plantations are also enjoyable. I used to dabble a bit in genealogy, but seem to have gotten away from that. I do like to "surf" the Internet and am in a few "chatrooms" (forums).
