I recently discovered her books when searching for some by Sarah Andrews about the geologist Em Hansen. "Murder With Peacocks" was eyecatching so I decided to grab it. It is a fun, zany book that I enjoyed. I read most of hers except for the "Owls Well That Ends Well" and "Access Denied".

Anyone feel like talking about them? I really enjoyed the Meg Langslow character. I always wanted to learn blacksmithing so enjoyed that part of her. I also recently got interested in the SCA so that part of it also made it fun to read with her boyfriend invovled in reenactments. Her family is fun, too (well, as long as they are hers and not mine!! ).

Her Turning Hopper I thought was done very well. I didn't think I would like it at first but it is pretty good. Any thoughts on this series?

Maria, Thanks for posting this. Intrigued by your description, I ordered the first book Murder With Peacocks. I enjoyed it so much, that I read it in one sitting. Now, I'm eager for more. I laughed at the zany characters and am glad my relatives aren't like them too!

I finished Owl Be Home for Christmas. I enjoyed it, though it was a pretty simple and formulaic mystery, but with lots of Christmasy stuff going on. The story is set in a luxurious mountain inn where a scientific conference of ornithologists (specifically, owl experts) are meeting the week before Christmas. They get snowed in and when one college professor keels over at dinner and quickly dies, suspicion sets in. Since no one can come or go due to the snow, if it's a murder (which of course it is), the perpetrator must be present among them.

A very light read was It Must Have Been the Mistletoe by Judy Astley about a large family group taking over an old house on the coast of Cornwall for Christmas. Rather too many characters who got through dozens of bottles of wine and spend too much time sobbing or hugging each other. Of course it all turns out fine in the end . . . and it snowed . . . something it almost never does that far South West. Kathy, there seem to be a lot of 'flu about in the UK. I'm sure a glass of hot toddy will put paid to your cold and help you sleep. A Happy New year to us few remaining here at RP. May 2025 bring some more readers and lots of new books for us to enjoy!

I forgot one Christmas read that I only read for the first time last Christmas but that may become another perennial: Advent by Gunnar Gunnarsson. It's a fictionalised account of a humble man who, at the beginning af Advent, would set out into the Icelandic highlands in the company of his sheepdog and a leader-sheep wether to search for lost sheep. The story is about the last of these expeditions of his. I haven't read the English translation, only the Icelandic one (the author was Icelandic, but wrote mainly in Danish and German), but the author translated it himself and the language is beautiful. One critic called it ' a hymn to Iceland, to snow and ice and to winter '.

Maria, I finished the first Turing Hopper book over the weekend and liked it enough to pick up the second one in the series. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble getting into it so put it down for now. I can have it for a month, so will try again, when I'm more in the mood for it. I'm eagerly waiting for the next one in the Meg Lansdown series to come in. I'm on hold for the next two, as I went through the first one so fast, I didn't want to have withdrawal symptons while I waited for the next one.
