I think most of her novels are related in that they usually take place on a reservation, or near it. She is of Native American heritage. She is one of my favorite modern writers, and I liked the novel mentioned above very much.

Last night, while reading The Master Butcher's Singing Club, I came to a detailed description of the accumulated filth in the home of one of the characters (way TMI). I had to stop reading. I don't think I have it in me to appreciate Louise Erdrich's writing.

It is true. We don't all like the same writers. Fortunately there is a wide world of novels from which we can choose.

There is that special recognition when we meet someone who loves the same books we do. But it doesn't always happen. Few of my friends like the same books I do.

I myself have never read anything by Louise Erdrich. I tend to get her mixed up in my mind with Barbara Kingsolver. I've heard she is good, but somehow I never happen to come across her books when I am in the mood for a literary novel, which I occasionally am. No doubt someday it will happen.

I'm in the Twin Cities where she is much celebrated. For many years I taught Love Medicine and The Beet Queen in undergraduate literature classes. Her works are complex and interrelated: I recall being quite lost when I first attempted a novel but grew to love and admire her work as I re-read, understood, and began to teach it.

I've been reading Last Report of the Miracles at Little No Horse and am enjoying it very much. I think many writers would have made a novel out of what happens to the main character in the first 50 pages. She certainly moves the story along at a good clip, though so much happens that just when you think you know what the story is about, it changes. Lots of interesting characters, too (perhaps too many).

Marita, I can appreciate that Louise Erdrich might be an acquired taste. I'm just not there yet.

I have several of her books on my TBR shelf, but just haven't gotten to them. I find her marriage to the late Michael Dorris sadly fascinating and am curious as to why/how she stuck it out so long with him, especially with all of the abuse allegations.
