Sorry Kansasfruiter now I remember you from about a year ago. I had confused you with Kansasapple, which is guy who is occasionally on this forum and owns an orchard in Edgerton KS. Southwest KS has a pretty different climate than what we have here so I can't give you any specific advice. It's pretty dry and you may be able to get by with little or no spraying. My advice would be to have someone monitor for fruit pests once the trees start producing, and if needed develop a spray program at that time.

Over on the Wintersowing forum we have an annual Newbie Seed Give-away that one very dedicated poster organizes on her own. It's called the Newbie Seed Project and it's done by Bakemom (Karen). If anyone from your group sends in an envelope, mailing address and stamps, she'll send back a package of 15 or more types of seeds. She'd welcome the donation of whatever seeds you have to spare, and she turns them around and gives them to others. She is accepting seeds donations at this point, and will start accepting requests sometime soon. She sends out whatever she has and doesn't take any requests for specific seeds because she sends out to over 300 people each year. MIght be just what your group could use. Wintersowing is a great method to check out, too, by the way. Martha

We've been able to recyle cardboard here for a long time. Not only cereal boxes, think toilet and towel paper rolls, kleenex boxes, cardboard from various packaging (think of the ridiculous amount in toy packages) and of course cardboard boxes (flatten first) We also recycle plastic bottles and other plastic products (just have to check the number on the bottom - anything 2-6 is considered recyclable). Sometimes our recycling bin is filled more than our garbage bin! >I have been turning off....air conditioner when not in use and have noticed a lowering of my electricity bill. Double check this one. Its always been a controversy around here whether you should just raise your AC when you leave the house, or turn it off, and then turn it on when you return. Which one saves more electricity? We generally turn ours up to 78 when we leave, turn it back to 74 when we return. I suspect that it takes less energy to cool it four degrees than it might to cool it 20 (remember tho I live in a place where 110 degree days are not uncommon in the summer. Might be different in milder climates) I shop local when I can - certainly the local indie (tho I still use Amazon and Borders for new books), and our Farmer's Market. Theres also this great local Taqueria (taco shop) near our house that I just love. Unfortunately, shopping locally means higher prices at times. If going local means driving 20 minutes, I have to decide whether I want to waste gas, or save money and use less gas. It is a cunnundrum. But I do try when I can.

Hello everyone, My name is PAM. I write it in all CAPS as there used to be about five Pam's here and this was an easy way to help differentiate. Not an ego thing, honestly. I hail from central PA. I have been on RP since the mid-1990's and remember the Spike years and being "Disneyed". I visit here regularly but have posted less frequently since I 1) got divorced and 2) started to work full time. But now I am getting back to RP and it feels great to be back "home" amongst friends. George Gissing is my favorite writer and I tend to go on and on about him occasionally. I do enjoy the classics but need to read more of them. As I get older, I find I am spending less time on fluff and more time on the non-fiction and the classics. (Present book club book EXCEPTED... ugh... true crime by Ann Rule.. someone SAVE me, please.) I read almost anything except romance, western and sci-fi. LOVE well-written non-fiction especially micro-histories. I shall definitely be crushed one day by my books. I love to garden but need more time. I enjoy needlework but need more time. And when it comes right down to it... I put away the needlework, let the weeds grow, and pick up a book. I am in three book clubs but often just show up for the wine. (AstroKath... Rosemont Estates is one of my favorites.) My favorite thing about RP is that reading is such a solitary passion (not hobby, PASSION), but here at RP, I can share with like-minded, intelligent, kind, people. Oh, and I am engaged and soon to be married. Life is so good. PAM

(kathy the same here, but usually after staring/thinking hard it works itself out eg 'Tom Sawyer' to 'Carpenter' was a good one, then to 'House'? Maybe because a wooden house is built by a carpenter? I hope 'Our Mother's war' followed by 'Rosie' makes sense to you!
