Should we have a rating code for books too?

Is it a sign of our times or is it just me?

It seems that gratuitous violence and unnecessary gore pop up more and more while reading modern novels.

Avoiding the obvious choices like murder mysteries, war and horror stories doesn't mean that this gore is not going to suddenly happen.

While reading a seemingly innocuous THE SEPULCHRE recently, I was disgusted that Kate Mosse found it absolutely critical to describe in gory , stomach-turning detail the results of a duel.

I resent getting invested in a story and then have the writer deliver a gut punch by slipping in disgusting detail which had no real value to the scene other than shock.

At least I can count on the older books to spare the reader the medical details to which many modern authors seem addicted.

Do we need rating codes on books ?!
