Koelreuteria in colder zones?

There are reports of K. paniculata being invasive in one county in the far south of Illinois, very far removed from Chicago. I contacted the Chicago Botanic Garden to ask for their input and they told me they have heard of no reports of invasiveness in my area. Thank you all again for sharing your experiences with this intriguing species. It looks like it may be only borderline hardy in my area, but I am still willing to give my 'Rose Lantern' a try! Hopefully my location in an urban heat island and my proximity to Lake Michigan will help to give it a fighting chance. It will be a such a treat to have a flowering small tree in late summer, especially if the flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.

Mitch, When I posted the link, you were one of the "new to Texas" gardeners that I had in mind. It is a MOST helpful website, and, for what it is worth, after living here for a decade, I'd say the freeze dates, i.e. "1 in 10 years......2 in 10 years.....5 in ten years" have proven to be accurate for our county. Remember, though, that averages are only averages. Our FIRST year here, the first frost hit around Sept. 30th, and I wasn't really expecting it. We did build a temporary "hoop house" structure over 6 tomato plants (in just an hour or two), protected them from that freeze and then had good weather for another 4 to 6 weeks. There's also been at least two years when we the first fall freeze was VERY late.....the day before Thanksgiving one year, and about a week or so before Christmas another year. In the latter, we actually had an "official" freeze in November, but it was windy enough at our house that the frost didn't do very much damage, and then the flowers and veggies hung in there until almost Christmas. One thing that has surprised me, though, is how MUCH colder it gets here in southern OK than it did in N. Texas. I am only 80 miles north of Fort Worth, so I expected some colder weather and a little more snow. I NEVER expected I'd see the temperature go down to 1 degree, which it did a couple of years ago. Luckily, the cold spells are normally not very long-lasting. You're farther north than I am, and you should be prepared for an occasional ice/sleet/freezing rain storm that may bring down trees, shrubs and power lines. Parts of Oklahoma have had very severe ice storm damage the last couple of years, so keep that in mind. The weather here is seldom dull. Dawn

Glad your ND is doing well, JJpeace. You're kind to call my replacement rate perseverance, when many times it's just plain forgetfulness (or willful ignorance of the facts). This year for instance, I replaced Crescendo in J&P's $9.99 rose sale when I meant to replace Catalina - Crescendo is doing just fine. Ah well, I have different microclimates in the yard and roses do better in some spots than others. I've had roses die in my ultra-protected sunny zone 6 spot (Remember Me, Oklahoma, Royal Parks) that do quite well in other more shaded or harsher spots of the yard. Most are the reverse, which is why my hot sun spots are getting really crowded. Part of the reason I replaced Blue Moon so often was that I insisted my lavender bed was going to be in part shade to protect the color, but since lavenders are wimpy roses they really need to be in full blazing sun to survive my zone. Live and learn! Patty, I meant to say that your kind offer was welcome but I've about decided that New Dawn is too much of a monster to put the effort into for my yard, and three tries is enough for me. Steve's comment that it would take extra time to establish is that much more of a reason to pass on this one, unless a ND happens to drop into my lap like a free one I got a few years ago. There are other climbers I like more. Glad GT has survived well for you JJ, and I've found that experimenting with grafted or not, or different beds can really make a difference in rose survival. Freak deaths once or twice aren't necessarily enough to put me off a rose (yet). Cynthia

Thanks vaporvac! JL like most climbers has a heavy flush of blooms in June, and sporadic thereafter. It can get pretty tall with beautiful pink flowers. I've had mine for at least 15 years. There's another climber that blooms for a long time in my garden and it's Super Excelsa. It starts blooming later in the season, but it continues blooming right up until frost. One thing to warn you though is that it's a thorny monster! LOL. Pic #1, Jeanne Lajoie; Pic #2, Super Excelsa.
