SUMMER LOVE

Summer, my love. WhatÃ¯Â¿Â½s this I hear about your leaving? ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s awfully early, isnÃ¯Â¿Â½t it?

You just got here.

We donÃ¯Â¿Â½t have to kid each other Summer, I knew when you came to town that you wouldnÃ¯Â¿Â½t stay. You never have. And even though you havenÃ¯Â¿Â½t yet said it to my face, IÃ¯Â¿Â½ve heard the talk and seen the signs that tell me youÃ¯Â¿Â½ve got your bags half-packed.

Just last week I saw ferns turning brown and brittle. I saw flower beds turned crisp and crackly. And I saw fawns, their white spots nearly gone. I saw the wild berries; they are about ready for picking. I saw the squirrels and the chipmunks too. TheyÃ¯Â¿Â½ve got food on their minds, winter food. That tells me something you havenÃ¯Â¿Â½t.

Come on love. DonÃ¯Â¿Â½t try to con me. You kiss me with 90-degree heat during the day, and in the evening caress me with the 70Ã¯Â¿Â½s. But before dawn, I awake and feel the restlessness in you, and the chill sets in.

You set this town on fire almost as soon as you arrived. You put the sidewalks to sizzling and the blacktop to bubbling. You had Ã¯Â¿Â½em gasping, Summer, and thatÃ¯Â¿Â½s what itÃ¯Â¿Â½s all about. And you and me? We fried and we broiled, but sometimes we found the shade where the little creeks run, and we swatted flies and drank the last drop from every cooling breeze.

I canÃ¯Â¿Â½t tell you what to do, Summer. YouÃ¯Â¿Â½ve always gone your own way. But please, oh please, donÃ¯Â¿Â½t go yet. Take me by the hand and walk with me some more. Tell me again how it was in the olden days and how it will be tomorrow in those places where I canÃ¯Â¿Â½t see or know.

When nighttime comes, letÃ¯Â¿Â½s hold each other close, just one more time. LetÃ¯Â¿Â½s count the stars in your clear summer sky, and lets listen to the music of eternity as it is played in the throats of frogs and the leaves of trees and the instrumental strings of those who dream the sweetest dreams.

And if you must go, sweet summer, and I know you must, then let me down easy. We will not be together as many times in the future as we have in the past. There have been more yesterdays than there will be tomorrows.

So stay with meÃ¯Â¿Â½.as long as you can.

I dug up some carrots yesterday because the greens were turning black and rotting from the rain. They were big under the ground though. Big--like 7 inches. What's going to happen if all the greens rot. Will the carrots still grow underground? I would love it they could continue to grow bigger. My onions are huge and beautiful. Since they grew so big from all the rain, I'll prolly have them last until next summer. Last year they were so small, they hardly lasted through early winter. They were pitiful and small. All the brassica is producing except for one deformed cauliflour head. Not one single cabbage worm this year. I gave up on my tomatoes and low and behold I started getting red ones this week. Since I got blight, I am happy for atleast some. They are super late and its a race now with the rain and time. Will I be able to pick more soon or will the fungus take them over before I could eat them? It's like playing the lottery. Cukes are growing big from all the rain. It's time to do a test dig of the potatoes and see if they're still alright under all that dirt. I am hoping the rain has made them big as whoppers this year. Leeks are reacting to the excess rain like the onions. I was told they would only get pencil size but they are fat like my thumbs. String beans are out of control producing 3 lbs per week. So far the only diseases is the blight tomatoes. Even the Jap beetles went away prolly due to all the rain. Some zuchini is still coming in but production has slowed and the slugs are back so got to keep laying the Sluggo regularly. All in all, the excess rain is actually helping the yield this year, except for the toms. Plus I hardly need to water and that saves the pump from running hours per day. Do I want more rain? NO. Please make it stop. We have no summer and only used the pool once this year so far. How much worse can it get?

i just sowed lathyrus matucana " " chocolate streamer sweet pea " " vernus rainbow mix heliotrope marine carnation cascading clove drops snapdragon cascadia my last ones died- but i did them inside adlumia fungosa climing bleeding heart has to be in the fridge thunbergia fragrans sweet clock vine ummmm can ya tell that i like fragrance?? the only one's that arent fragrant i got as bonus's!! LOL i did see that on another site i really do want the trailing carnations!! they have some kinda black thingi in them!! WOA BABE!!!! so later if someone wants to trade something for them!! i so want to!! LOL i right now have sweet william!! they are so great smelling and garlic chives and very fresh!! LOL HEE HEE HEE YES an addict!!! LOL ~MEDO (ummmm better than being an addict to other things though!! YES???) **big grinn**

Lady Ashe is tip hardy for me in W. PA ZONE 5/6. Got it from Chamblee's in 2013. Four years in the garden thus far and it is 9 ft. across (4.5 ft. each direction), growing on a 4 ft. fence, and still growing. Extremely BS resistant. Its first flush is in clusters of no more than 4 blooms, but subsequent flushes are one to a stem on 2ft. long stems. Its growth habit is therefore somewhat climbing hybrid tea like as the season progresses. The flowers are not large, never over 4", but are packed with petals and extremely high centered when fully open. Looks like a layer cake. They last an eternity on the bush. The fragrance is strong but does not seem to carry by my nose. Like all climbers it did not take off in its first 2 years. Last year and this year it zoomed ahead. It does like its groceries and responds best to regular fertilization.

I love that. I love spring, summer,and early fall but dread winter. Already I have restocked the longjohns and am trying to prepare for the long, cold siege ahead.
Maybe somebody can come up with a wintry literary something that will help those like myself feel better about it.

I don'tmind the cold but dislike the icy wind. I try to get outside everyday. This year I am trying something new. After the time change, going to bed an hour earlier and getting up an hour earlier. Do my reading in the early AM. Don't like those long dark evenings that start at 4 PM. This forum has me ordering books. just finished the 13th Tale and Rooftops of Tehran. I found a book written by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, "Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead. Diaries and letters 1929-1932. What a life. I am going to try some of her later writings. This one truly "touched" me. Puts my life in perspective.

Neversink4, I love the writings of Anne Morrow Lindbergh! She wrote a series of memoirs about her early life and marriage to C.A. Lindbergh. I highly recommend her "Bring Me a Unicorn", which details her college years and how she met Colonel Lindbergh, and their courtship. They then wrote a series of books together, about their travels and flights: "Listen, the Wind," among these. If you are interested in the Lindbergh family, I highly recommend "Under a Wing", which is a family memoir by Reeve Lindbergh, one of their daughters. Then, there is always A.M. Lindbergh's "Gift From the Sea" which is a classic, full of wisdom....

I am a four season person, myself, but two months ago, moved South to the "land of eternal summer." I miss the red maples, copper beeches, and russet dogwoods, but we still have many summer flowers in full bloom....

Thanks Woodnymph.I will look them up. I just happened on the book at an antique shop and bought it for $1.00. So many interesting people to read about..kinda puts our lives in perspective.

The summer here in New York City was so blistering and humid for sooooo many weeks .... dragging into months, that it was a relief when the cool weather came!! Talk about "a breath of fresh air." . . . ! ! Besides, winter is my favourite season : )

Of course we haven't had really cold weather yet, but I suspect I am enjoying the chill way too much - it is very satisfying to burrow down into a down comforter with a good book and some music.
