Where do odd expressions come from?

Where do odd expressions begin? And why??

We were talking with a friend the other day and the expression "monkey shines" was used. I wondered where that began and what does it really refer to. I know that it means trickery or foolishness...but what are it's roots?

Does anyone have a good resource for odd expressions?

I don't want the definition as much as some backstory on them.

I would just ask Google "meaning of monkey shines" or any other saying. It will tell you all. I Love Google.

Yes, but I know the meaning.
I was just wondering how I could find out where it came from and why the expression exists.

Actually there are many expressions which are so odd that I'd like to know when they began and why.

Not really gulping air, more like an echo of water in an attached pipe. It's hard to describe. The reply on my xpost was that I could be caused by a dry trap. The contractor, today, installed the rest of the fixutres and ran the water down the tub drain. I have yet to hear the noise, so that may have been it.

How did "river jacks" get the name? Where do they come from?

I'm finishing off a 65' long french drain by topping it with a dry stream bed. I've covered the 57 gravel with more landscape cloth and then "river jacks". I suspect that there are various sizes of river rocks that can be call "river jacks" and my supplier has delivered two tons of rocks that range from small and round, larger flat and round and quite a few larger flat stones. If I order what they call 1-8" creek gravel it looks like very small to bigger (I guess 8"). Of course we're talking about a natural rock product and there probably will never be absolute consistency (this ain't Disney Land!) unless you spring for much higher priced hand-picked specialty rocks. Anyway, I've tried to find out why river jacks are called river jacks. And I'd love to know where they are "quarried". Anyone able to shed some light? Here's a photo of my delivery of river jacks. I've started to distribute them and realize that once I get the bigger ones placed I will be able to see how much they've covered and rearrange them to be as natural as I can manage. Then fill in with what I've got left (if any) and may need to get some of the 1-8" creek gravel to fill in for a fuller natural look and try to add some curves since there is only one since it started out as a much needed solution (french drain) for storm water runoff. I also plan to add some large round rocks from my rock collection to enhance the natural stream bed look.

Well... Gumby may not be happy, but as a really old, long-time gardener I learned something today: I didn't know that snails laid their eggs in soil. It always amazes me how fast these buggers can travel... and how far. It is my understanding that, thanks to some entrepreneurs in the Gold Rush Days, California has been blessed with very large snails meant to be Escargo on wealthy Prospectors tables. And, I've found that putting out the snail bait in the Fall really deminished the next year's snail population. Also, there are the midnight garden raids with a flashlight and baggy. Kate

I did a Google search for "origin expression monkey shines." Found a site which discusses origin, as well as that of a number of other such phrases, as well other such sites.

Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable isn't bad on meaning and possible origin.

I recently came across "The Word Detective" site. Very informative. I was looking for the origin of "Busman's Holiday" after reading "Busman's Honeymoon" and got a good explanation there.

The Oxford English Dictionary is often the last resort of such explanations. My library has a hard copy but I think you can get it online, for a price.

Once you start reading the OED, life as you know it ends. You just can't stop!

I subscribe to "A Phrase a Week" online, which provides both the meaning of an expression, as well as its possible origins (a recent phrase was "Mind your Ps and Qs"). It's out of the UK, and I always enjoy reading it.
