I think the Jewish twist might be going too far, but they made the suggestion that she wasn't the typical German child because of her coloring. I wasn't sure why it would be important other than to make her stand out from the others in the story.

Which book would you give someone who's never owned a book?

Mariannese's comment is EXACTLY what the concept of my post (well, actually the WashPost blogger's post) is meant to imply. Not a book for someone who has never read a book, by his or her own choice. But a book that has moved you to some great extent -- whether by teaching you a lesson of compassion or love or understanding, or encouraging you to follow a dream, or simply by transporting you to a different world that you would probably never have the opportunity to experience. The kind of book that you know you always want on your bookshelf to reread over and over again -- one that you must own. And for a child, the ownership factor can mean a great deal, esp if that child comes from a poor (financially speaking) family. (The first book, for a child, that I thought of was Dr. Seuess's "Sneetches.")

    Has anyone read this book?

I havent read the book either but i also recall the story. Yes, there have been numerous stories of lost hikers on the AT and on its west coast counterpart, the PCT as well. Further, nefarious people on any trails are not new. If anyone read ’Wild’ you will recall the author was approached by some men, apparently hunters, while setting up camp one afternoon. She felt uncomfortable after speaking with them and as soon as she could, she broke camp and hiked on. I think this was also portrayed in the movie. My good friend rides trails, never alone. She had an uncomfortable feeling not long ago when they came upon someone just sitting in a vehicle smoking where they planned to start riding. Their plans changed very quickly, even though both were carrying concealed.

I hope it wasn't a victim of Hurricane Sandy !!

yoyo, don't you know who should have it from the list included with the book? It is possible that person is not posting or reading RP at this time.

I arranged the list geographically and sent it off in the package.
So, even if I were to reference the master mailing list it wouldn't solve the mystery !

I've heard some fun things regarding it's journey and think I might be expecting it's return soon.

    Maybe?

    Veronicae?

    Wolfseeker?

    Has it been there?

Do you know who had it last? If so, he/ she could at least let you know where they mailed it to for starters.

I had it in August and mailed it to upper NY, near Corning, I cannot remember the name of the town or person. It was later reported by Sheriz to be with her in CT. And that by Sept. 19 she had sent it along on its way.

A funny thing happened on my way to the post office...

I was at the post office over the weekend, picking up a package and lo and behold, the Bookmark book came back to me! The outer wrapping that I used was torn, but the book is fine. I guess the book never got very far by the looks the wrapping, it must have been placed somewhere and was overlooked. The wrapping was dirty, like it had been sitting on the floor in a corner.

I will be sending out along to Helen in NH again. It boggles my mind how things like this happen.

Helen, keep your eyes peeled. I should get it out by tommorrow and my fingers are crossed that it makes it this time!

    HURRAY!! !

I was hoping that it hadn't been lost forever.

Let us know when it's on it's way again, Helen ;o)

    Oh WOW!

Me?? I didn't know I was in on this, how cool!!!

OK... I'll be watching the mail *very* closely! I promise post here as soon as it shows up, but my mailperson dances to their own drummer, so it may be a wee bit. Thanks!

The Bookmark book is back on the road again!

I shipped it yesterday,Dec 4th. Let's hope that it makes it to it's next destination without any more problems!

Please let the rest of us know the title of this mysterious tome, so we can decide to join in (or not).

    woodnymph.......

It is a book about bookmarks that has been travelling in the US to all those ( in the states) who were involved with the Christmas bookmark exchange last year.

The book has been on the move since February 2012 and it's a mystery where it will show up next !!

In the end...all working out as planned...it should be returning back to me.

So that's what it is! For some reason I thought it was another book that had been mentioned and people were having problems finding. Is my name on the list for it too and I didn't remember it? I was part of last year's bookmark exchange.

Actually it's been rather a surprise visit.
No one knew about it until it showed up on their doorstep !
    And it's journey continues...............

Ok, I got the bookmark book in the mail yesterday! I've only had a few moments to glance through it quickly so far, but I'm really looking forward to being able to take a little more time, for a longer look tonight! I will let you know when it leaves for it's next destination. Helen

Funny......I just opened up a copy of THE ALCHEMIST which I'd found at a book sale.
The cover blurb says : "...story about the pilgrimage that life should be."
And inside I found that the last reader had left an SAS ticket stub* apparently used as the bookmark.

Perhaps a traveler on a pilgrimage of sorts !?

    * question: the ticket says : HAL Security Terminal
    Anyone know what HAL is?

    Happy New Year !
Have you enjoyed your wee book guest?

    The list is short now,
    Almost done,
    It's been to almost
    Everyone !

    ( atleast, that's my best guess ! :0) )

Yoyoban, I googled. It could stand for the Hindustan Airport, airport for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Also for HAL Bangalore International Airport. All seem to be interchangeable terms.

    Interesting !
It goes along with the whole entertaining idea of things left in books...and how they sometimes follow the theme of the book.

    Thanks for the info.

Yoyobon, another alternative answer. I searched on airport codes, and HAL is listed as Halali Airport in Namibia. (But I didn't check that SAS flies into there!)

I enjoyed the bookmark book very much, and it has made me much more aware of bookmarks I both leave and find in books now. :)

    Yes, it is a treat.
It made me want to leave something amusing in books that I give or donate which have to do with the theme or title.

Hmmm.....that might be an interesting thread !

THE BAKER'S DAUGHTER by Sarah McCoy ( bookmark: front label from a stollen !)

    Helen,
Is the book on it's journey again?

    YoYobBon,

No, not on it's way yet, but it will be on my next day off when I have time to get to the Post Office. That will be on next Tuesday, the 15th... (WOW! are we REALLY almost halfway through January *already*???)! I will post and let you know for sure when it's on it's way.

    The wind is blowing
    The snow is snowing
    And the book is going....

    Perhaps to you?!

( I cannot believe it's been almost a year since it began it's journey)

It's been fun to track where it's been so far. I wonder where it will end up next. :)

I can't wait to welcome it home again and enjoy any additions made to it during it's travels.

I hope it's been fun for everyone....but where, oh where can it be ?! :0)

    YoYo and Everyone!

I finally got it into the mail today! I'm so sorry it took so long: I had planned for it to go in the mail last week, but came down with an unexpected (and even more unwelcome) virus soon after my last post.

I don't have internet access at home,or I would have posted sooner. This is my first day out and about...sure feels good to be among the living! But, I hope you all are a lot warmer than it is here in NH!

Thank you so much for including me in this, I really loved the book and the newer *inclusions*! So much fun!!

    Helen

    Helen,
That virus is horrendous..so glad you are feeling better.
And so happy to hear you enjoyed our book adventure !!
    So it's on it's way...........

The weather down here is dreadful.
Single digits, winds, wind chills that freeze your nose shut...not fun.
I have reading, knitting and making soup as my main interests right now and that is cozy rosy .

Just have to wait out this Artic freeze then perhaps we'll have our normal cold winter weather ( which will feel pretty balmy after this seige)!

The bookmark book found its way to my house, yay! I've thoroughly enjoyed it and will be sending it on its way very shortly. I think it has quite a story to tell when it finally arrives home; I'm glad I got to share in its journey.

The bookmark book has set out on another stage of its journey.

Yoyobon, thanks so much for initiating this venture. I have enjoyed following the thread and now that I've finished the book and sent it on its way (with a little addition), I can't wait to hear the rest of the story!

    Isn't this fun!

I haven't seen it ( of course) since last February when I sent it on it's long trek to California to start the journey.

Needless to say it will be such fun to have it show up here again.

I sense it's getting closer to home :0)

When I passed it along I had no idea it would encounter so many adventures.

    That makes two of us.

Crossing the country, getting lost at a distant PO....and who knows what else.

Oh, if only books could talk !!

I would love to see the "bookmarks" added since I had the book.

I cannot imagine what is traveling with that little book !
It will be quite interesting to see what you creative little souls have added.

Perhaps I will need to photo the end results and post them for all to enjoy.

The bookmark book arrived this morning and I assume I am the last recipient as the next and only label is yoyobon's! And this means that I get to see everything that has been added along the way. This book has quite a story, and I was just thinking that a whole new book has been created. Books within books...and the little bit that I added is something I have had lying on my desk for some time, wondering what to do with it. Now it has a home.

I hope it is okay if I keep it for awhile as I would like to take my time looking it over.

Siobhan ......keep it as long as you would like and enjoy it.
I'm so psyched that it has made it through all it's journeys and is still here to tell about it....and finally it's coming home !

    Yaaay.

I will definitely have a follow up to all this for all those who had the pleasure of it's company.

    Yvonne :0)

I can't wait for you to post your follow up for us to see.

Just out of curiosity, has the bookmark book returned home yet?

The book has not returned home yet.....but I have heard from Siobhan that she has enjoyed it very much and is ready to send it on to me.

I am so eager to see it .

I will share with you all the stories it has to tell .....:0)
I hear there are many .

    Will keep you all posted.....

Just got a note that the book is in the mail on it's final leg of the journey back to me !

I'll have something to show you all next week......:0)

The book arrived back home after a year of traveling !
It was packed with all your additions and notes .
I had such fun finding each item and will love sitting down and reading everything and enjoying it's journey.

Thank you all for putting up with any inconvenience of having to mail it along.
As we learned it even got lost in the mail for a short time yet still surfaced and was able to complete the trip !!

    The souvenirs inside included:
a B&N gift card ( with $2.16 still on it !!), letterheads from workplaces; bookmarks found in other books, old poem, photo found in a book, personal notes from you, yarn label, B&N receipt and many more items !

Here are photos of what it brought home from it's travels.

Yoyobon, thanks for sharing the book and what you found in it. It certainly had quite the story to tell (pun intended)!

Yoyobon, my thanks to you as well. It was so much fun to receive the book when it wasn't expected and to see the items others use as bookmarks. I purchased two copies of the book and gave them as gifts to reader friends.

It has been wonderful fun to watch its progress around the continent. Thanks, Yoyobon!

Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed the journey as well.
