Personal Descriptions.....

On another forum, I made a reference to a group of people being Hispanic. To me, it was part of the story that I was telling. I was jumped on because I wasn't being Politically Correct.

So, I got to thinking. How many of our favorites depend on being able to visualize the characters because the author mentioned that they were Hispanic, Italian, had almond shaped eyes, or mocha colored skin? Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware series often refers to Milo's sexual preferences and the problems it causes. Would his stories work just as well if we assumed that all characters were straight?

Would good writing be just as good if all references to ethnic groups were eliminated? And if so, would the average reader just assume that everyone was white of European Ancestry?

I may be wrong, but I feel that a story or happening is weakened if the characters are not described. Definitive ethnic traits are important. Just saying a person has dark hair and brown eyes is not enough.
