My sister posted this link to some very interesting bookstores. I like the one on the barge. Has anyone been to any of these?

I have been several times to Munro's in Victoria, BC, Canada. The building is beautiful and spacious. Many, many books.

Would love to visit Leaky's in Scotland, the little van in Portugal and The Book Barge in any of its ports of call.

I have been several times to The Village Bookshop just north of Cleveland, Ohio, on Granville Road. It, too, is located in an old church, and is filled with rooms upon rooms of remaindered (discontinued) books. You could wander there for hours.

And I meant to post this before -- I found a used bookstore called Reader's Paradise! It is located on Route 38 on the outskirts of Butler, Pennsylvania. It is not such an unusual store, but deserves mention due to its name.

The cabinets I recently helped my brother tear out were solid pine, about 100 years old, painted, with inset doors and drawers. The cabinets themselves were clearly sticked in by a finish carpenter -- no fancy joinery there, just nicely fitted butt and miter joints fastened with lots o' nails. The end panels, shelves and vertical dividers were wide, clear pine boards; no frame-and-panel there. (Try and find a 22" wide, clear, straight-grained piece of pine today, though...) The doors were clearly made in a millwork shop somewhere else, all joinery cut with a shaper setup similar to modern cope-and-stick router bits; they weren't old enough to attribute to fancy hand molding planes. Drawers were rabbeted and nailed too (no dovetails), and their joints had lasted longer than the softwood wear surfaces they rode on. Five or ten years ago I remember finding some reprints of very old carpenters' guide-books, containing a lot of diagrams and note about how things ought to be assembled. Something like that might be useful. I know that Lee Valley carries a selection of reprints of old woodworking texts, so perhaps you can find something there. Maybe you could find an old house in your area that still has its original cabinetry, and get a look at how it was done.

Rosefolly - What a surprise to find someone here whose father invented the very thing we're talking about! Since I didn't touch the epoxy (wore new workmen's cotton gloves), that isn't what caused my skin to react. It was on my face only. The lumps were below the skin surface. But, it was combined w/ paint; so the mix is maybe what did it? After the anti-biotics, my skin was as smooth as glass. And the project? A great success. I'd painted the porcelain wall tiles, tub, sink, toilet in my new apartment. Not only did it look custom-made, but it shone as if all new. Even scrubbing w/ scouring powder didn't mar the finish -- that's why epoxy is needed in the paint. People asked me if I'd had the bathroom remodeled...a neighbor saw it, did his w/ epoxy paint, too. In spite of my little debaucle w/it , I recommended it to everyone. Sarah Canary - Maybe one reason "Smilla's Sense of Snow" appeals to us so much is because we're both January babies? ... As to the characters -- I'm not having any problems keeping them straight in my mind. Could be because they have such different first and last names...makes it easier. Yes, I agree, the atmosphere is a big part of this story -- really sets the mood.

What is SKYM ??? What would the world be w/out book browsing places? Living in NY City there are quite a few book stores, but -- alas, thanks to Barnes and (ig)Noble, so many of the independents have gone out of business. Luckily, there's still the wonderful Strand -- full of new and tons of out-of-publication books. Like digging for buried treasure ... then finding some fascinating-looking book that's out-of-print and (probably) will never be re-published, that turns out to be a GEM...and you end up keeping it for life because you know you'll want to read it again someday! I need to touch -- HANDLE -- each book that catches my eye. It goes much faster, too, as far as flipping through the first pages, reading the back cover reviews and synopsis .... quicker than on a computer! Also, I like to GET OUT, and it's fun to sometimes get into a conversation w/a clerk or another shopper. I've discovered soooooo many good books buy browsing inside a store!

Holly, yes, I could look elsewhere for the same pen (and did) but at this point, if I am going to stick with the same pen, I'll stick with the original purchase (I got 20% off the price). They've estimated that it will ship from CO 6/10.. (after my note of disappointment), they are going to see if they can have the manufacturer ship to me directly. That will save a little time and I appreciate the effort. They did offer a few other options that they do have in stock but the only one I am considering is the same pen with a medium nib. I did look at other pens, including levengers, the cross apogee and the waterman hemisphere. There are many good pens for less than $200 (with the 20% off, I actually got the Parola under 200) but the reviews weren't as consistently good.. not bad but not as consistent. I am really torn because so much of the rating is based on personal preference. The decider for me last week and even now to some degree was the packaging--which is really something special but doesn't have a thing to do with the pen itself. Another limiter is that there are a lot of finishes/colors that I nix outright as either too grown up or too fancy. This kid is classic and serious but also rugged. He is going into archeology, he plays rugby and hikes, etc. He's a mix of Old Navy, llbean, and Burberry! I am sticking with Navy or black with chrome/stainless details. Lascatx, I hear you on the value of the pen for a young man. I bounced this around quite a bit also. I did the same with my own niece and jewelry, etc. He does take care of his valuables but at college, it's as much about the other kids as this kid. I expect that he will cherish the pen-- much like he does other valuables and it may or may not go to school with him. I am ok with that. I see this gift as a mark of transition from a boy to a scholar of the world... not necessarily an instrument for college. I really like the idea of the notepads or custom stationary but at this point, they'd have additional delays to be personalized. If I still feel the need to include something additional, I think I'll go with moleskin which I can pick up at B&N.

The only unusual thing about our nearest bookshop is that it is for sale.
A wonderful opportunity for someone with the readies, I think ÃÂ£150,000 for shop and living accommodation above. If only I was about 50 years younger with no other ties I would snap it up. The trouble is, if I were to run it I probably wouldn't actually allow any of the customers to buy the books.

veer, it would be a dream come true to buy that bookshop.

My favorite is neither small nor particularly charming but it does have character and appeal. Plus tons of books both new and used. The Strand in New York City is the one place I must go everytime I get to the city. Sadly, I confess that I often walk past other shops because I know The Strand will be cheaper.

I rather like The Hickory Stick Bookshop, in Washington, CT. It's one of the few independent bookstores left within driving distance of that area.

Artemis, Washington, CT is such a beautiful little town. I went to a wonderful outdoor wedding in the 60's in a charming old white farmhouse that at the time was next door to the property of writer William Styron. The owners were artists. There is, sadly, a lack of independent bookstores now in the Eastern US, and I miss them!

I'm sad to say that most of the independent, interesting book store in the Los Angeles area closed when Borders and Barnes and Noble came in -- the small stores couldn't meet the prices.

City Lights in San Francisco is one of my favorites, although I'm not sure if it is still there.

There is a wonderful bookstore in St. Louis in the states -- it's Hammond's Books on Cherokee Street. I will post a photo and some reviews of it later. It's a dream. Also, I confess -- owner is a family member but if you went there, you'd agree with me.
