Mitford Series

Has anyone read the latest book in the Mitford Series? It is Somewhere Safe with Someone Good. I find it harder to read than the rest of them. The author, Jan Karon shifts to another character and just says "she" or "he" and doesn't let you know who it is. I love the series but this one leaves me confused, of course that is easy to do at my age.

I have the book but haven't started to read it yet. Sorry to hear it is difficult.

I've read the Father Tim series and the Ladies of Covington series as well. Good easy reads. Another of the same sort is the Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross. If you are a quilter the Elm Creek series by Jennifer Chiavirini (sp??) is good too.

I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books (I'm 79). There is some sex in there but not overly descriptive and they are also funny, a good combination. She has a football series that is hilarious and one not of the series called "First Lady" about a woman whose dead husband was President and one named "Breathing Room," about a business woman and a movie star.

yes i read series. i've chugged thru the 'Dune' books i read all the aubrey/mauratin novels by o'brien i read all the horatio hornblowers (just to compare--there is none) thinking of tackling the julius caesar/first man of rome for this winter--re-reading all from the start. i do usually find that they eventually become formula-ic if the series is a continuation of action over time. also a problem arises if each book stands on its own, in that the author needs to rebukd the character/environment each time (you want to say, ok,ok i already know this, tell the new reader to start at the beginning, don't bore me. but then you realize that the auther is just doing character development that is necessary, but you've read it over and over. diggerb

Vee, basically this series is about the life of a minister/priest and his family that takes place in a small southern town. I would describe the series as "gentle reads." No violence, rather tepid in style. I read a few many years ago, then I found them so predictable that I stopped keeping up with the series. They are very popular with some folks, not the younger set, however.

Sorry I had computer problems and have been busy fixing it. As wood says it is about a priest and how he cares for his parish and neighbors. I loved the one about the recluse who lived near him. On his walks he hears great organ music coming from his home and would stand near the fence and listen. Later he found a bench there as if the recluse knew he was there and inviting him to sit awhile. He saved a boy whose parents were neglecting him and is now trying to save his brothers. He marries at the age of 60 and can't believe he found a woman who could love him. I think it is a very nice read.
