Row cover fabric breathes. Air and moisture move easily back and forth through it. Any heating benefits from it are minimal and transient. Its frost protection comes from preventing direct air contact with the leaves. Plastic on the other hand does NOT breathe. Instead it traps and holds heat and moisture so the benefits from using it for the purpose of early planting far exceeds any you would gain from using row covers. Plastic tunnels are relatively easy to maintain. You just have to open the tunnel ends in the morning before leaving for work and then close them down before sunset. Once "early gardening" time becomes "normal gardening" time the tunnels are removed or the plastic is replaced with row cover fabric. Dave

Hi Buford, Yeah, there's been a lot of sun and there hasn't been a lot of that humidity that folks like you and I on the east coast have to put up with normally. It may very well be sunlight-related; it's just all bass-ackwards with the bloom order of various plants this year. :-) Thank you for your response!

What are your averages? (rainfall, temp & sunny days)

I live in Camarillo California which is located about 50 miles WNW of Los Angeles along the 101 freeway. I was unable to find specific sunshine averages but I know it's better than 300yr. Rainfall is about 13-15 a year averaging less than one inch from May through September. The average high low for August are 78/60, and for January are 67/44. Highest temperature ever recorded was 103 Lowest temperature ever recorded was 28. Every month has a record high of greater than 90 (Santa Ana's can occur anytime here, but are more prevelant late fall through early spring, and are the primary source of our record highs in those months) I used data from the URL below, along with my own records and the records obtained when I type in my zip code instead of the name of my city. I have higher temperatures than the table below, but warmer low temperatures (Summer and Winter) than the other table (one station is 4 miles nearer the ocean, the other is on the western foot of a hill in a valley [frost pocket] that blocks the seabreeze 4 miles further from the ocean.) First Dahlia flower- after first frost! Can I improve next year?

Engrgirl, there can be a great deal of variation in bloom times from one dahlia to another. I grew 30 different dahlias here in CO this year, and the first bloom on one of them was around the end of July. Another one, treated identically didn't offer the first bloom until mid-September, with the others falling in between. It was a season with a late start because of lots of cold rain in May, so I didn't get them out until late May. I agree with cici that more shade will only make your problem worse. Did you remove the plants from the pots when you planted them? I've had good success in past years by starting the tubers in big 2 gallon pots, drilling lots of holes in them to allow big roots to make their way out, and setting pot and all into the ground at planting time. I would recommend digging some balanced fertilizer into the soil at planting time, especially in new, sandy soil that doesn't already have anything in the way of nutrients. I have well drained soil and have to water my dahlias almost every day. It's also a good idea to put your supports in the ground at the same time as your dahlias. I use five-foot long rebar. If your plants were already flopping over to the ground at two - two and a half feet, it sounds like they were either already stretching to reach more sun or subjected to a lot of wind. If your soil is really sandy, it may not be holding the water and nutrients well enough for the plants to make use of them, in which case some added organic material such as peat moss or shredded leaves worked into the soil might help.
