Jennifer: If you really only get 2-300 hrs chilling some of your new tree list will not work. I found Earli Autumn severely lacking in quality. Tomcot needs more chilling. Lapins, Stella and Rainier all need more chilling. I'd suggest Arctic Star nectarine over Fantasia or Jolly Red Giant. Nothing but rave reviews on Arctic Star. It's a top ten fruit for me, in other words about as good as anything. You might consider some figs and persimmon. Both very low chilling and easy to grow. You'll like them if you give them a chance. I loved my Strawberry Verte figs this year but there are many good varieties. I prefer the astringent until soft persimmon but you might like the Fuyu types.

Daylilies are one of the easiest perennials to grow and some of the most durable. They are not the slightest bit frost sensitive - you can plant them any time your soil is workable - and they are very tolerant to a wide range of gardening conditions. You are always going to get varying opinions, but having grown and sold tons of perennials professionally over the years, my experience with these plants is that they are far less requiring of specific attention than most other perennials and extremely forgiving. They are not fussy about soil quality but would prefer decent drainage. They are also very drought tolerant once established and do not require much in the way of supplemental fertilization. The occasional mulch with compost is more than adequate. They are also far more shade tolerant than many expect, but too much shade will result in fewer blooms. And the only time I've ever deadheaded a daylily is when I was expecting a garden tour or to spiff up the plants at the nursery. Periodic dividing is about the only 'regular' maintenance necessary.

I have a Ruby Stella,(deep red) and Stella Supreme(clear yemon yellow). These were introduced in 2003. I bought them at Lowes. They had a Jackson and Perkins (known for roses) identifying tag. The folks at the Daylily forum pooh poohed them, something about them being only available at Lowes, not good stock/breeding, blah, blah, blah. They were both classified as everblooming. Supreme may give a very sporadic bloom later in the season after it's initial bloom in late June, but Ruby is a blooming machine in comparison. Bloom begins later in July and continues till frost with a steady display of several flowers opening each day. The flowers are smaller than most daylilies and are deep red/maroon with a yellow throat. Not a show stopper, but a reliable show for a very long time.
