PAM I had a look round on Google trying to keep away from Wikepedia and similar sites (not to be relied on for accuracy) and came across the one below, which I had forgotten about and as you know cannot be bettered for clear-sighted concise information. ;-)

Thanks veer and cece. This book was recommended by a friend when we were shopping at both Barnes and Noble and the Paperback Swap earlier this year and I am so glad that I've read it.

That older thread was only from last year so I cannot believe I missed it, unless I was pointedly ignoring it since I hadn't yet read the book. But I've just read the old thread twice. The first read-through to enjoy the conversation, the second read-through to take notes and copy down titles.

I finished the book last night downstairs at the kitchen table. Not usually my favorite most comfortable place to read, but when I awoke this morning, I was shocked at how many reference books were piled on the table. Like many others on this thread and elsewhere, Tey has made me "see" history in a new light. The Henry's and Edward's confused me a bit until I put down the Tey book and read brief bios on the Henry's and Edward's. I also had to look up attainder, and some other parliamentary acts that were legal then, but illegal now. Also of interest, the fact that a man named Tyrell played a role in the book. While digging for Tyrell's in my books last night, I came across one Walter Tyrell, a knight, who "accidentally" killed William Rufus, aka William the Red, King of England from 1087 to 1100. Coincidence?

Also, just now, I've come across The Richard the III society, whose patron, Richard, Duke of Gloucester said,
"Â the purpose and indeed the strength of the Richard III Society derive from the belief that the truth is more powerful than lies - a faith that even after all these centuries the truth is important. It is proof of our sense of civilised values that something as esoteric and as fragile as reputation is worth campaigning for."
I shall attach the link below. The site seems to be rather complete listing facts, archaeology, Richardian fiction, and a section on the 15th century. I've bookmarked it as it seems to mcuh to take in at one sitting.

Fiction plays an important part in the culture surrounding Richard III. Novels can set the scene in a way a work of scholarship cannot do and therefore it is important to acknowledge their role.

The following selection of novels featuring Richard III has been made by Carolyn Hammond, the Barton Librarian for over twenty years, who retired in 2001.

BOWEN, Marjorie
Dickon: an historical romance (1929)
The author was an early supporter of the Fellowship of the White Boar - this is her account of RichardÂs life, rather romantic and old-fashioned to modern readers.

CARLETON, Patrick
Under the Hog (1937)
Covering the period 1470 to 1485, this is still one of the best novels on the life of Richard III, especially for those who do not care for Âhistorical romancesÂ.

DAVIDSON, Margaret
My Lords...

One of the Jacqueline Kirby novels by Elizabeth Peters is called The Murders of Richard III, and moves back and forth in time between Richard and the present day. Ms. Peters reaches a similar conclusion to that of Josephine Tey.

My college history prof had the Tey book on his required reading list.
