Just culled the books

Librarians call it weeding. From the books on my shelves I removeded about 200 books, all destined for the Friends of the Library sale. I do this every few years. My criterion is whether or not I will ever read or refer to a book again. I don't have room on my shelves for a book to sit there and look pretty. Somehow the ones left behind look better with the extra weight gone. It makes me think how I would look ten pounds slimmer!

This exercise shows me how my tastes have evolved. For example, a lot of the elementary garden books went, though I kept a few I still refer to again and again. And background books that were research for a novel I never actually wrote...ah, well.

I feel good to look at the shelves and see only books I either have read and loved, use to look up information, or still have an interest in reading. I feel as though I just did an old-fashioned spring housecleaning, virtuous and in control of my environment.
