Time Travel stories.........suggestions?

I really enjoy a good time travel story. Have read the OUTLANDER series, KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR, TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE.......

Do you have any other suggestions for a GOOD read in this genre?

I know that there are lots of mediocre romance /time travel but I am requesting a REALLY GOOD read, not a fluffy piece that is poorly written.

Okay....that's your assignment.....what do you have?? LOL

This topic crops up frequently, so I'll trot out my perennial recommendation: The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier. It's not fluffy by any stretch of the imagination. The place and time settings are: 1) Cornwall in what was modern day at the time of writing, the late 1960s; and 2)14th-century Cornwall, the years leading up to and including the Black Death. In my opinion, it is a really good read, so much so that I rank it #4 on my list of all-time favorite novels. I reread it about once a year.

I am "tickled pink" that Pinkie is still in the hearts & minds of some of us! LOL A special thanks to don_socal for the link, "What happened to the old GP days?" Wow, what a stroll down memory lane! Neat to hear some of the names of folks I still remember, and have a bit of an update on where they are now. I had drifted away from the gang before Dicken passed on to the Eternal Garden...so sad to read that. Spent the better part of a morning going thru the box of old photos I have but found only a few pictures of Pinky. I had taken her to a Civil War re-enactment on our little town in SW PA where she met with the brave nurses that traveled with the troops. Among the photos I had was one of her on a makeshift table with a nurse in costume dressing a "wound" on Pinkie's leg. :-) Had another one of Pinkie being held by a slightly bemused modern-day EMT that was also there, and of course several pics of her among the various pink flowers in my garden. Unfortunately, I found none of these better pictures. Cannot imagine where I put them for "safe-keeping" but someday when I least expect it I imagine they will surface! Anyway, thanks to those of you who responded, and for the pleasant nostalgia trip! Best wishes to all GPers for a terrific gardening year. CK

My daughter was on the iconic three month travel through Europe after she graduated from college. She asked me to come and join her for ten days. She, with the confidence of youth, instead of making reservations for a lodging, would find the listing of available places in the train station and we would pick one. It made for some interesting experiences. We arrived in Edinburgh, Scotland, tired and anxious to settle in for the night after walking all day. This time we found a winner, a small, classy hotel on a side street. The room was cozy. The mattress on the bed was so thick that one almost needed a ladder to climb in. The attached bathroom was clean and in good condition, but was a remnant from a prior century. The sink was large, the toilet had a pull chain, and the tub was very deep and narrow, there was no shower. I called "first dibbies" (a family tradition in a home with only one bathroom) and won the right to get the dayÃ¯Â¿Â½s grime off first. The tub held enough hot water for a delightful soak and I settled in with great contentment. After a while, there was a knock on the door and a voice inquired if I was all right. It was time to leave the tub - but I couldnÃ¯Â¿Â½t get out! Now I knew that my hips werenÃ¯Â¿Â½t that wide, it was just that there didnÃ¯Â¿Â½t seem to be a level place to get any leverage to stand up. The water was getting cold and again the voice on the other side of the door was a bit more insistent - "are you sure youÃ¯Â¿Â½re all right?" The story of President Taft stuck in the White House bathtub ran through my mind. At last, in desperation, I got on my knees, got my right hand under the lip of the tub (the old fashioned bathtub actually had a lip) and reached my left hand way over to an almost out of reach towel rack, and with great relief, heaved myself out, wondering what would have happened if I hadnÃ¯Â¿Â½t been able to. As I left the bathroom, I warned Claudia in very strong language that the tub was the spawn of Beezlebub, but she just laughed and I thought I heard her mutter something that sounded a bit like "she losing it" as she disappeared to finally get her share of the hot water. She was gone a long time - too long. She, young, strong, and slender, at last emerged quiet and red-faced. She had to admit that she had quite a struggle to get out of the tub too - but I never did hear about how mothers are always right. I wonder if anyone who stayed in that room more than one night ever took more than one bath.

I did go to see the movie, and was not blown away by any means, but also not completely disappointed by it either. I was curious how they were going to apply the book so it made sense in a film version and I think they did the best they could. I went with two friends who did not read the book and both of them really enjoyed the movie. I explained to them that it was a "candy-coated" version of the book. Everything portrayed in a much lighter way than in the book. It lost a lot of the charm of the book but I wasn't upset by it like I usually am after reading a book and watching the film adaptation. I've seen far worse than this. Johngalt: As far as your issue with the wedding playing out with the older Henry, I think you forget that even when his future self is present in the past, that is the way the past happened, even if he isn't aware of it at the time. Remember that as Clare grows up she knows Henry without the present Henry being aware of it. He doesn't meet her until their 1991 meeting although she knows him intimately. So, even the first time around, the wedding occurred with the future Henry stepping in for the present Henry. Which is why Henry has no free will outside of what is happening to him at the moment. His future is decided as well as his past.

My two favorites are both by Connie Willis, To Say Nothing of the Dog which is humorous and light but intelligent and well-written; and The Doomsday Book, which is a serious, almost somber story, and incredibly beautiful.

I also liked Pastwatch by Orson Scott Card, describing an attempt by a future doomed society to go back and set things right so that the world will not come to an end a couple hundred years from now.

Eric Flint's 1632 is the first of several he wrote about a contemporary blue collar West Virginia town wthat gets transported to what was going to become Germany early in the Hundred Year's War. With a cheerful can-do attitude they set about first surviving, then improving local conditions so that they don't slip into an unpleasant way of life. It isn't really well written from a literary point of view, but it is fun to see the author manipulate his characters as they attempt to rewrite history. I read only the first one, and don't plan to read the follow-up stories, but I enjoyed his fresh approach.

Finally, I suggest Kage Baker's Company series, beginning with In the Garden of Iden. In this series a mysterious organization of scavengers from the future create cyborgs in the past to collect great treasures that are about to become lost. The cyborgs are the main characters.

I like time travel stores, too, as I suspect you can see.

Gregory Benford's Timescape is a very well written novel that examines the physics and paradoxes of time travel as well being a very human novel; the characters struggle with the same problems we all do, such as marital problems, workplace relationships etc. I read this book through twice in a row.

"The Devil in Velvet" by John Dickson Carr. Mystery story I've read long ago & cannot find a copy to replace my lost copy, probably lost when moving like some others. It's about a 20th C cop who got "sent" back to the Elizabethen era to solve a crime.

Also, "Fire, Burn" by John Dickson Carr; same as storyline as above regarding a Scotland Yard inspector transported back to the 19th C for crime solving & aid in creation of Scotland Yard.

"Time and Again" by Jack Finney is a favorite of mine. It takes place in NYC 1880's. Great descriptions of the time and good story.

He did a sequal called "From Time to Time." Again it takes place in NYC, but did not have the same magic as the first novel.

Barbara Erskine has written several books with a sort of time travel theme. The characters don't travel in body but have a link to an ancestor and kind of re-live the life of that person. I liked Lady of Hay and Kingdom of Shadows the best.

You will of course have read the grand-daddy of them all, THE TIME MACHINE by H.G. Wells. (Somebody wrote a sequel recently, but I doubt it is any good.) LEST DARKNESS FALL by L. Sprague de Camp is one of the most fun "go back into the past and tinker with it" stories.

How about THE STORY OF THE AMULET by E. Nesbit?

My all time favorite is "Replay" by Ken Grimwood and a recent one by J.T. Whitman called "STR8 BOLT". Excellent concepts on both of them.

Yoyobon, I have read all the books you mention and I think you would like The Mirror by Marlys Millhiser. It's one of my favorite time travel books and is a romance too. It does not have the explicit sensuality of the books you list but it's still a very good read. Worth seeking out.
Nora Roberts has a time travel Sci-Fi book that I cannot recall the title but it was enjoyable. It is not one of the JD Robb books, which are about time travel (or just futuristic?) although I have not read any of those.
And if you haven't read them, I think you might also like The Clan of the Cave Bear series.

Wow, a year old thread and I see a post of one of my all time fav books. Door into Summer is so excellent, in terms of Time Travel, character development, and just darn good story telling.

I separate time travel from futuristic. My fav examples of the first include Time Machine, Time Ships (Stephen Baxter writes a sequel to Wells classic), Time Travelers Wife, Time and Again, and Time Enough for love (another Heinlen).

Then there is a wonderful short story by Woody Allen in Without Feathers. I can't remember the name but it involves a professor who is able to travel not so much into time but into a book. Absolutely hilarious.

I really like Fire Burn by John Dickson Carr, mentioned above by First User. Other suggestions are Green Darkness by Anya Seton and The Nonsuch Lure by Mary Luke.

Bumblebeez.....yes indeed...I have read THE MIRROR and it was one of my all time favorites along with THE HOUSE ON THE STRAND and the others I had mentioned!
I found THE TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE to be tiresome, don't know exactly why.

Hope some great writer out there comes up with a super read in this genre.
