Stardust, or all things Gaiman

Stardust is a young adult fantasy by the English Neil Gaiman, and was recently made into a movie. I loved the book but its not my fav Gaiman. Thought the movie did a really good job of cutting to the chase of the story, and the use of special effects made it worth seeing (plus seeing Michelle Pfiffer age before your eyes was amazing). Anyone read or see this one? Its been compared to Princess Bride, if that encourages anyone. Would love to discuss the book, adaptation, and other works by Gaiman.

Hi Cindy,

I've not seen the movie, but I did read the book. I agree, not my favorite Gaiman. I think that would probably be American Gods ... although I also liked Neverwhere, which was the first Gaiman I read.

I'm off to bed, so don't have time to discuss right now ... but I'll be back tomorrow.

Whhile I have read several of Gaiman's books, I have not read this one. My daughter and I saw the movie the other night. I thought it was enjoyable, but not wonderful; certainly no Princess Bride. She liked it somewhat better than I did. We both agreed that Michelle Pfeiffer as the witch was superb, as was Robert de Niro as Captain Shapespeare. I would say that it is well worth watching, but probably won't be your favorite movie ever.

There have been film verions of Neverwhere and Mirrormask. Any good? Maybe I should wander over to the other forum to ask. Sorry.

Debra, Debra, Debra! You seriously need to stop posting such lovely pictures....you are such an enabler it should be illegal...LOL. After ordering over 60 this spring I NEED to STOP wanting more daylilies, but you're making it impossible. Every one you show is always so pretty and irresistable and your photos are perfection. Love them all but my faves of this group are Techny Peach Lace, Green Mystique and Purify My Heart. I just planted Land of Cotton and she's already putting up a scape, so yippee! It will be awhile before mine is a big clump like that but it is fun to see what I have to look forward to. And thanks again for my lilies...Northern Fancy is finally up north! Celeste

Thanks. everybody, looks like Stardust Heiress is a hit. I tell myself not to buy DLS based on pictures, but I succumbed when I saw that triangular eye and the green throat. However, the stats on this one are okay, so we will see what happens in the future. Kay, Childish Dream is registered as a pink, but as it seems to happen so often, the color is more on the peach side; no matter, I'll take it!! Julia, I was surprised that Persian Market already had four more scapes coming up. This has been a good year for this one, and the color of the picture is really close. Jean,, maybe by potting your Persian Market, it will perk up and bloom. Nancy, I have just decided to ignore the dormancy thing--I know it could be a risk for you since you are warmer than we are, If you really love a plant, I say go for it, unless it costs a bundle. I was lucky to get Snowflake Empress as an Instant Buy for $10, and the seller sent an excellent plant. However, if it dies on me, I will be sad, but not out a lot of money. Val, glad to know you like Small World Snow Owl, since it is on the plain side, but it just stops me in my tracks when I see it. Avedon

Aha.. this is fun but it's turned into a little of "one for me, one for you".. and fast moving towards "two for me, one for you"! I am loving the recommendations and have added some to my own list! I hadn't thought of Breakfast at Tiffany's -- a timeless classic.. and I think it's perfect for the niece heading to college in New Haven/short train ride to NYC. Richard Feyman is great for bf.. just trying to remember if he's read it. Not related but it reminded me of the Freakonomics books which quite delighted him. The Big New Yorker books are also great gifts! I like the dog cartoon one also. Sorry to not call out more of those mentioned but as I said, "2 for me.. " I've added a lot of the above to my own list!

11/10 - Page 3 and it was good and worth picking up. Multiple page quotes are just more I can read & react to so early in the morning, generally I get to quotes when "first light" appears in the sky and dawn cracks, but I was up in "the middle of the night" with coffee, so-called news and so-called weather and doing my duties as demanded by my owners, the 4 feline club.

Which other forum? If they are talking about sci fi and/or Gaiman, I'm intersted.

I think Paula's referring the Movie Forum. My niece saw the movie yesterday, and she enjoyed it. I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to see it, but it's on my list.

I didn't realize there was a movie of Neverwhere. I'll have to check and see if Netflix has it.

I thought the book ... now I'm back on Stardust ... was quite different from the other Gaiman books I've read. It had some darkness, but not as much as his other books. It also seemed "simpler" somehow, then his others, as well. The motives of the characters were much more overt than they were in, say, American Gods.

The Neverwhere TV series came before the book. Gaiman adapted book from his own script.

His children's book Coraline is listed on IMDb as being in pre-production.

What I would love to see is a big-budget live action TV series based on the Sandman books.

Netla, Sandman is so precious to me that my heart would be broken should they mess it up. Because Gaiman does so much of his own production work, don't you think it odd that he hasn't done a Sandman yet? Certainly the stories are wonderfully scripted, but the art contributes greatly to the Sandman tales. I'm thinking that Mirrormask tried to bring that art to the screen and, imho, failed.

Two or three years ago I was offering to mail for free a Euro version of the vcr for Neverwhere I'd bought before I realized our vcrs used different coding. No takers. I just got rid of it a couple of months ago. It is available on DVD now, published by A&E who broadcast it here in the States.
