Booker Prize Longlist 2013

You must have wondered where I was.

For some reason, I can't post from work anymore - obviously RP is massively subversive or something - and I've been a bit busy this week.

But here it is.

Five Star Billionaire - Tash Aw (Fourth Estate)
We Need New Names - NoViolet Bulawayo (Chatto & Windus)
The Luminaries - Eleanor Catton (Granta)
Harvest - Jim Crace (Picador)
The Marrying of Chani Kaufman - Eve Harris (Sandstone Press)
The Kills - Richard House (Picador)
The Lowland - Jhumpa Lahiri (Bloomsbury)
Unexploded - Alison MacLeod ( Hamish Hamilton)
TransAtlantic - Colum McCann (Bloomsbury)
Almost English - Charlotte Mendelson (Mantle)
A Tale for the Time Being - Ruth Ozeki (Canongate)
The Spinning Heart - Donal Ryan (Doubleday Ireland)
The Testament of Mary - Colm Toibin (Viking)

I've read exactly one of them - and I read that today. The Testament of Mary is less than a hundred pages long. It's a brief, but very moving, story of Jesus from the point of view of Mary, his mother. I don't think it's got a chance of winning - it's too short - and that, for me, is it's main fault. It could have been a lot longer and been a much better book.

I've got The Spinning Heart, A Tale For The Time Being, Almost English, and two parts of the four parts of The Kills - it really is four books, not just one...

I've also got a hardback first edition copy of Five Star Millionaire which I bought earlier in the year on spec. So let's hope that one is short-listed and saves me a few quid!

I'm going to make a determined effort to read the whole long-list this year, as far as possible. Three of the books haven't been published yet - one of them is not actually published till after the short list is released. Why do they do that?

Shortlist on September 10th.
