I'm in southern California, and even here, my hens slow down laying in the winter months, it's their bodies giving them a natural break. A bunch of mine are also molting (dropping tails is the fashion here, it seems!), and hens don't lay while in molt. It could also be that they are upset with the thunder. Keep them warm, dry and secure to help reassure their little chicken souls. :) As stoneunhenged says, factory farms use artificial lights. Personally I let Nature take it's course and allow the hens to take the winter off, I feel it's a natural break that their bodies need. At less than a year old, your hens still have a lot of eggs ahead of them. As long as you are sure that they are not ill or suffering from worms or mites, things should perk up again in Spring. Hens can lay eggs internally, it's called egg peritonitis when an infection occurs internally from a broken egg that has escaped the oviduct. Usually this is fatal, and hens show very obvious signs of illness. So if yours are perking around like normal, I doubt if this is the case. Have you ruled out the possibility of a hidden nest somewhere? Maybe they ARE still laying! :) Velvet ~:>

Hey Love! It's good to hear from you and I'm really happy that overall things have been going so well. You must have been working very hard to get to the 95% disengaged and that is just great news. UGH to the storms. SS is terrified of tornadoes too, and they are not that much of a threat here because of the terrain. (We do have them, but they generally only hit four or five houses at a time, hop back up into the clouds, back down again - not like the areas where they leave a path of destruction for a mile.) We had one here about a month ago; I set SS a task of calming and explaining to one of the pets what was going on (pets all being in the cellar with us). So SS (as I'd hoped) told the pet all of the stuff I've told him - even if funnel cloud comes down it doesn't mean it's going to hit our house, even if it does it's likely to just take off roof or something and we'll fix it, even if it destroys most of the house we'll be safe in the cellar and we have insurance for everything else. It really seemed to help calm him - the more he repeated it to the pet the more he seemed to believe it himself. (We were fine- we had hail larger than golf balls so I was a bit concerned myself that time!) I think some parents do that because they don't have any friends. If I heard a scary noise, if I were hiding in the cellar because of a tornado warning, I'd call or text a friend for encouragement - not a kid! Great, kid can worry about me, but I'd prefer an adult who can see on the news that tornado hit my area and if I don't answer, can drive over to check on me. Does DH get along well with the teacher? Maybe they can both tag-team BM - teacher can tell BM that she's really hoping to be able to talk reason to her since DH doesn't seem to "get it", how important summer school is for SS, how teacher is optimistic that the child's mother (unlike his father) can understand that.....if BM thinks she's putting something over on DH she'll do it in a heartbeat. :-)

Latex mattresses sold by the big "S" companies are rarely, if ever, composed of 100% latex. They contain layers of cheaper foam which tend to sag over time, and mattresses with pillowtops sag the worst. I once saw a chart showing specifications of big-name "latex" mattresses and you wouldn't believe the small amount of real latex. There might be five layers of different types of foam with one or two thin layers of latex. About four years ago I was looking for a latex mattress and did a lot of online research, including spending many months reading posts on a mattress forum. I learned about several online companies that sell real latex mattresses and provide great customer service. Specialty stores in some geographic areas (not mine) also sell latex mattress, some organic. But I was on a limited budget and knew I could never afford any of these (and I question the concept of organic latex but that's for another thread.) Based on suggestions on the mattress forum, I took a risk and made an online purchase from a web site called foambymail (the company is Foam Factory.) I purchased a 6" firm base, a separate 3" soft topper, and upgraded to a terry cover, which has a zipper around all four sides (a $20 upgrade.) The mattress comes shrink wrapped, shipped by UPS. Shipping is free. Latex is very heavy and a friend helped me lug it upstairs to the bedroom. We placed it on the platform bed before unwrapping it. As we cut through the shrink wrap carefully, it made a whooshing sound as it expanded. The 6" latex base had already been placed by the company inside the mattress cover, so we only had to shift it into place on the bed. We placed the 3" topper inside the cover and zipped it all around. Since I like cushy beds, I bought a separate mattress cover with its own pillowtop made by Cuddledown (from Costco). After four years, the bed is like new and it's the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. If I were doing this again, the only change I would make is to get a 2" soft topper rather than 3". I might also substitute the Cuddledown cover with a wool topper since the Cuddledown is filled with polyesther and sleeps a little warm. I paid less than $700 for a full size mattress and topper; it would be a little more today. Here is a link that might be useful: Foam Factory

I second Gary's opinion--take a look at the new induction ranges that are out. If you have had induction for the last 20 years, you are not going to be happy with a standard electric range, I can almost guarantee that. I've had a ceramic top electric for the past 17 years and I have hated it--I'm going to be very pleased to get rid of it and am replacing it with induction. If your husband doesn't cook, then his opinion doesn't count when it comes to appliance choices. You can tell him I said so. :-) Seriously, though--your cooktop has given it's all, and at that age probably won't last much longer. If you're planning on replacing it with a range, then get something that will fit in the space you have planned for it. Oherwise when the cooktop goes, you'll have to re-do that space to fit the new range, or replace it with another cooktop. Good luck to you! Cj

Indeed, that's the common theme. (I meant to include a Harry Potter book - I just forgot!)

Lost Empires is most certainly worth reading - it's an exceptional book. Having reminded myself of it, I'll probably take it on holiday to re-read.

The fruit of the horse chestnut tree. Conker is an annual event in most schools every autumn. (Though no doubt, people are now trying to say that it's dangerous!) You drill a hole in one, put a string through it and then challenge someone. You take turns to hit your opponent's conker with your own. The winner is the person whose conker survives. It also gets a number - so a conker that has beaten four other conkers is a three-er.

You soon learn that the big shiny good-looking ones tend to get smashed rapidly. It's the little shrivelled hard ones that survive the best.

My daughter's previous PR firm used to host the World Conker Championships sponsored by a well-know US icecream firm. She spent a number of Autumn weekends organizing the event. As Martin says it is really a kid's game, but some adults take it very seriously!
