Hens haven't laid eggs in 10 days...

Folks,

We are new to raising chickens and raised two "production reds" (that's what we were told they were) from chicks. Once fully grown they began laying eggs....almost an egg per hen every other day.

The hens are less than a year old and all-of-a-sudden stopped laying. It has been raining a lot and we are in Florida so it thunders quite loud....could they have been "spooked" into not laying.

Do chickens only lay "seasonally" and the season is over? Are they sick? At less than a year old...could it be possible they are "past their prime" in terms of egg-laying age?

We have an aluminum picket fence and every once in a while they "squeeze" through the openings.....could an egg "cracked inside the hen" and injured them? Will they recover from something like this (assuming this is what happened and cause them to quit laying).

These hens are more like pets than "production" hens for us....so please don't advise that we "eat them". Any other advice will be well-taken.

Thanks,

Newbie
