I have read all the Plum novels in order and was disappointed with the sad decline of Evanovich's writing over the last 3 or 4 books. I said I was done but then I decided that she had been doing so poorly that no editor would let her publish another Plum novel unless she improved. I want my money back!!!! I pre-ordered Seventeen and on the 21st it was to be sent to my Kindle. I got up at 6:30 and there it was! Fast breakfast and then I began to read. I hadn't read for very long when I noticed I was 30% into the book. That made me uneasy because so far, nothing even mildly interesting had happened. I went to the store that day, to Wegman's, a supermarket chain that had the book in stock for 40% off. I picked up the book and sure enough, it was pretty skinny. I finished the book in a few short sessions and was totally disgusted at the end. There was no plot development; just more crappy Ranger/Morelli dilemma as to which man she should choose. The scenes between the men and Stephanie were absolutely vulgar--not like the previously brief bedroom descriptions. Stephanie is no longer the nice girl who is struggling because she loves two men--she is a slut. What decent man loves a slut? I guess they all have feet of clay. The usually crap about Grandma Mazur's ghoulish fascination with peeking into closed caskets is just warmed over ilk. The entire book seemed to be the result of grinding out another in a long series even though Evanovich didn't have a new twist anywhere in the story. The author might stoop to trying to pass another book off on her readers with the hope that they are addicted to Stephanie's absurd life, but I can't believe any publisher would tarnish its reputation with the dull, labored, trashy "Smokin' Seventeen." The only way this book will ever be smokin' is if the paper copies are burned! Oh, well, Sue Grafton's V installment comes out in November and maybe she has had the integrity to put in an effort to keep her long series at least entertaining.
