Historical novels set in Venice

I'd like to read some historical novels set in the city of Venice. I know there have been many written over the years, and I've read a few, though more that were set in Florence. I thought I could tap the wisdom of the forum to see if I could get some suggestions for more titles.

Would Death in Venice by Thomas Mann be 'historical enough? It was written about 100 years ago. Made into an excellent Visconti film staring Dirk Bogarde.
Sarah Dunant's In the Company of the Courtesan is set in Rome and then Venice during the sixteenth century.
And although Miss Garnet's Angel by Sally Vickers is set in modern day Venice one can feel the age of the city and its damp crumbling buildings through every page. A most evocative read.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW by E.M.Forster starts off in Venice - very evocative. Though I know that some people have difficulty with Forster's 'tone'. Personally, I love his gentle but biting irony very much indeed.

You could say that. A few years ago, I was quite bored and I knew I needed something to occupy my mind. Books were nice but.... I needed something physical (yeah and my doctor hounding me to get some exercise may have had something to do with it as well!). Anyway, I was reading a Rex Stout mystery (Over My Dead Body) and it involved, of all things, fencing. Well, that put the idea of fencing in my head! (No, neither Nero Wolfe nor Archie Goodwin fenced in the book) I've been fencing since then. I now help with the teaching of some beginners' classes at one of the local clubs and have actually gone into a side business involving fencing equipment! (No, not "fencing" as in selling stolen goods!) Fencing's quite enjoyable. I get my butt handed to me quite regularly by the MUCH younger fencers (ahhhh.... youth) but there are times when age, wisdom, and just plain wilyness (or trickery!) can beat youth, speed, and strength. ;-)

lacey-when you try to do several quick posts to one thread, the site does get cranky. all you need to do is change the text in the "subject of posting" box above the message box, and it will accept your subsequent posts. weird, but true! Lady Jane Grey is an enigma, and thus an easy subject to "historic-fictionalize." Carolly Erickson, whom I have enjoyed as a biographer for many years, has been seduced by the success of the Other Boleyn Girl series into doing one of Lady Jane...imho, greatly inferior to her bios of the Tudors. sigh.

I have attempted to read a truly dreadful book which I cannot throw anywhere as it was a gift, but as soon as decently possible I'll pass it on to a charity shop. The 'story' called Code Girls set during WWII is about a group of females sent to a large mansion to supposedly learn the 'art' of cypher breaking. But our three heroines are cooks/skivvies working in the kitchens. They are all endlessly describes by their brown/hazel/green/blue/flashing eyes, their long floaty/curly locks and their curvy/slim/long-legged figures. They giggle endlessly and their merry laughter 'tinkles' from dawn to dusk. I am rather hoping Hitler drops a bomb on the lot of them. The 'author' also makes several basic clangers . . . getting the name of the Prime Minister wrong, describing the vehicle driven by handsome local vet (he of the golden chest-hair and brown muscular arms) as a battered 'Land Rover' some ten years before it was designed, plus others too boring to relate. Many females reviewers at Amazon loved it!

Vee, we have this kind of thing at the libraries I go to. In my local library there are several displays. One is right in front as you walk in and handy to the check out machines. So a reader in a hurry can find a good recently published book and leave in seconds! I agree that it is hard to suggest something short when you don't know the reader's tastes. Libraries do usually have a Help Desk and can refer the reader to something suitable on hand that they might like.

I hope you don't mind my pointing out that the first part of "A Room with a View" is set in Florence, not Venice. I bought both the book and the wonderful movie for my trip to Florence last fall.

A site I just discovered the other day is BiblioTravel. You can enter any location and some suggestions pop up. It's not really a forum like this but you join for free and add your listings. Or just read others' listings.

I just checked BiblioTravel and it lists 27 books set in Venice, many of them historical novels. Of course, getting the personal feedback of people here is best but it's good to have another source.

The Venetian Mask by Rosalind Laker was pretty good fiction.

Eco's Baudolino has scenes in Venice, as does Stephenson's Quicksilver.

Daughter of Venice by Donna Jo Napoli is a YA novel set in Renaissance Venice. Based on a the life one of the first female scholars of the time, it is beautifully written, full of historical details, and tackles topics such as the rights/roles of women during that time and the oppression of the Jewish population (but not at all in a heavy handed way.) I really loved this book and feel that it has an appeal to readers of all ages - not just young adults. (Oh! and I just remembered - it has the added attraction of accounts of printing/bookbinding in Renaissance Venice. The heroine - in disguise as a boy - befriends a Jewish boy who gets her work as a copyist. And there are lots of details about Venetian architecture and art as well as daily life. I really love this book. lol. I forgot how much. I'm going to have to re-read it I think!
