Roger Zelazny's short story A Rose for Ecclesiastes, Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Melville's Moby Dick, Flannery O'Connor's entire oeuvre but particularly the novella, A Good Man is Hard to Find, Waiting for Godot or is that too obvious?

All of Dostoevsky's novels also.

With Faust you get poetry, a play and an opera.
Look to Conrad's Lord Jim for hostile biblical themes.

Better question might be, what doesn't contain biblical themes? ;D

Chris, I know, it's a pretty wide subject. Some of the themes in the Bible are just universal, which is why I will only be including the ones that are obviously meant to be biblical and not ones that might or might not be.

That is why Conrad can be interesting on the subject. Biblical themes imbue our culture such that even those hostile to religion are still saturated with it.

Re plays, the first one that came to mind was Tobias and the Angel by James Bridie.
There are a large collection of Medieval Mystery plays that used to be performed by the guilds of English towns (Wakefield Coventry etc) and the children's opera Noye's Fludde by Benjamin Britten is based on one of these (you can hear/see part of it if you go to youtube)
What about the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors by Menotti? About the visit of the Magi.

John Steinbeck gets CRAZY with the Biblical symbolism in East of Eden. Lots of reference to Cain and Abel, to the point where all the evil "Cain" characters have names that start with "C" and the good "Abel" characters have "A" names. (To make matters worse, Cathy--the ultimate evil character--is described in very snake-like ways, think Garden of Eden.)

"Gideon" by Paddy Chayefsky - dramatization of Judges. The first non-musical I ever saw. As a lover of musicals, I never thought I could be as interested in straight drama. How wrong I was. The last line of this play took my breath away, and still can just remembering it. And visualizing the scene.

The Robe by Douglas. Christ in his ministry. Some "explanations" of the some of the miracles that are miracles in them selves...great food for thought. Again, I can remember whole paragraphs and scenes of this book I read almost 50 years ago.

The Master & Margarita, by Bulgakov. I have yet to read it, but it sounds wonderful.

Mary Called Magdalene, by Margaret George might work. I don't know how accurate it is, but I have always enjoyed her writing. She does a stunning amount of research for her books, so it might not be too bad.

Marek Halter has a several works out called the "Canaan Trilogy". One is about Moses wife, Zipphorah. I read his book about Sarah (Abrahams wife) many years ago. The only thing I remeber is that the start of it is a bit strange and that I did not care for the latter half.
Someone called Orson Scott Card also has a series of biblical novels I think.

Please, do not read Pilate's Wife, by Antoinette May. It is the worst book I have ever read in my life. The author actually has Jesus in the Temple of Isis saying he "finds peace and strength" there. Weird!

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant tells in the first person the story of Dina, daughter of Jacob and Leah. Loved by some, hated by others, I thought it was OK.

Thanks everyone. I have been going "why didn't I remember that!" at several of your suggestions, e.g. East of Eden (which I read over 20 years ago) and the Golden Compass trilogy, which I have also read (I think I even wrote something about the religious symbolism when I reviewed it).

How Far to Bethlehem? by Norah Lofts, story about the journey of the three wise men

The tribulation series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. The writing is terrible, but it was interesting to see what they did with prophecy.

There are biblical references everywhere in T.S. Eliot's poems and plays, but I can't think of any specific examples.

Great Lion of God.....Taylor Caldwell (the story of Paul)

"The Shack" by Wm. P. Young treats the Holy Trinity with an entirely new and unexpected twist. It is controversial and thought-provoking.

I second "The Red Tent" by Diamont, re Old Testament themes.

"The Passover Plot" gives a new twist on the Crucifixion theme and I found it intriguing.

Although juvenile, The Bronze Bow is a Newberry award winner. I loved it.
I haven't read them, but Anne Rice has written a series of novels about the life of Christ that might be interesting.
And while I don't care for Christian novels at all, I did like This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti.

"The Preservationist" by David Maine is a retelling of Noah and the ark.....

C.S. Lewis' Perelandra and Out of the Silent Planet

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers is a retelling of the biblical love story of Gomer & Hosea, set in the California gold rush. I haven't read it, but have been told that it's very good.
