Endings in Books

I am interested in books where authors have altered or thought twice about the endings, due to various reasons best understood by them. For instance, it is well-known that Great Expectations by Charles Dickens has an original ending that was not used by the author, which is still preserved to this date.

Similarly, I am sure there were (and are) many writers in English (I am interested only in writers writing in English) who have thought twice about their endings, for instance, those writers whose fiction was serialised. AC Doyle revived Sherlock Holmes due to popular demand. In some cases, writers have reworked on endings in order to avoid controversy.

Could members name such books and the reasons why the writers reworked/reconsidered the endings?

Thanks and regards,

S
