There are smaller "couches"" duel love seat, some with divider--some without. I have one that makes into a bed. Yes I have seen living roomw without couches. It could be easier to arrange, especially without the TV. Their use to be a computer program that you could design your own living room and move furniture where ever you wish. I kind of like the idea. Especially if the chairs are easy to move.

Furnish it in any fashion that suits you ... who am I to dictate, or even make remarks about, the way that you choose to furnish your house?

Five years ago I bought a new house and it seemed so big. After I got my furniture in it had shrunk in looks. I got rid of my sofa and bought two chairs. At first I had them in a TV setting, curved around across from the TV. It still looked two crowded so I did this. Now I love the roomy feel of my living room again. When I have company, I use the dining room chairs which swivel and rock a little. This is the view from the entry way.

I saw a living room in a magazine recently with a central coffee table, about 5 club chairs arranged around it, in front of a fireplace. That was the main attraction in the livingroom. It was very inviting!

Note: It had little side tables and lamps along the walls.

I just could not picture it, but I think I like it now that I have seen it!! Thanks everyone!! I feel better about it now.

When the time comes to replace my sofa and loveseat I plan to go with two loveseats. Nobody likes sitting in the center of the couch anyway.

Many years ago, I switched from a couch and a chair, to two loveseats. Our loveseats are each 2 reclining seats. You never get more then 2 adults to sit on a couch anyway. This way there is room for 4 rather than 3.

Our living/family room is long and narrow, with the fireplace on the side of one end. I furnished it like two different areas. We have the 2 loveseats on the end by the fireplace, plus and extra chair and coffee table. The other end of the room has the TV and 2 recliners and 2 glider rockers, plus a few tables and lamps. Each end has it's own focal point, yet it is all worked together.

No couch in my living room. Just a loveseat and three lazy boys. No one sits in the middle seat of a couch anyway.

I'm just about to buy furniture for the house we'll be retiring to. I have no intention of buying a traditional sofa. While the room is a decent size, with a fireplace, and the radiators, positioning a sofa in there would be a challenge. I've decided on a love seat and 2 small comfy, matching recliners.

Besides the furniture positioning, another factor I'm considering is that--at age 60--our next move will probably be to a senior citizen apartment. A love seat will be a lot easier to position in a smaller area.

But what I really wanted to say to you is this. NEVER restrict yourself by thinking/asking, "Have you ever seen...." Your house is YOURS--do what makes YOU happy in it. It really doesn't matter how other decorate their places--they don't live in your space. 20 years ago, every kitchen designer I spoke to told me I couldn't do what I wanted with my kitchen, that 'no one' arranged a kitchen the way I wanted mine. We gave up on them, and were our own general contractor. My kitchen design is great--to this day I'm happy with it and wouldn't change a thing. Other people who have seen my kitchen think it's a fantastic arrangement. You know yourself and your needs best. Listen to yourself before you listen to the 'experts' who are more often than not, just salesmen trying to feather their own nests.
