Mmm, was that you who got me to read Replay? Not a bad book - certainly the concept was excellent and the first 2/3 fascinating. Then when he met the other time traveler, I thought it lost steam. Connie Willis however I have always wanted to read, so this rec I'll have to pick up as well.

More time travel books? Time Machine of course, House on the STrand (another rec I got on this forum), Jack Finneys book (can't remember the title), Time Travelers Wife come to mind first. Then there is the wonderful short story in Woody Allens Without Feathers about the professor who makes a time machine that allows you to travel to the book of your choice - he choses Madame Bovary.

There was also Timeline by Michael Crichton-it was made into a movie too.
I must be in the minority re Connie Willis, read Doomsday Book and didn't care for it-far too many unanswered questions just left up in the air-almost like there was a sequel to come and I didn't care for the present day characters.
I also read her book Passage I think maybe for discussion here years ago?-didn't like that either...I did say I was probably in the minority....

If you don't mind a little strangeness with your time travel, The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers is a lot of fun. On the more serious side, Octavia Butler's Kindred also involves time travel.

Passage is possibly about time travel. Hard to say in truth. It is one of the most haunting novels I have ever read. Stayed with me for a week or so and still gives me a chill to remember.

Speaking of - I can see why Passage wouldn't be considered time travel, and why it would. Certainly its one I will be looking for.

Another Tim Powers: his thriller Three Days to Never has some interesting side effects of time travel, with cameo appearances from Albert Einstein. :)

I think the Jack Finney novel was Time and Again, also made into a movie, IIRC, with Jane Seymour & Christopher Reeve.

There is also a sequel to Time and Again, but I can't remember the title. An older TT novel is Isaac Azimov's The End of Eternity. And, of course, H. G. Wells's The Time Machine.

I too was unimpressed by Connie Willis's books, and I had really hoped to like them. Robert Charles Wilson has written a number of very unusual science fictions novels. I'm sorry that I can't remember any titles, but at least one dealt with time travel. He's a good enough writer (unlike many SF writers, unfortunately,) that I'd recommend just about any of his works. Other than Wilson and Ursula Le Guinn, I can't think of any SF writer I would say that about.

John Wyndham has written several short stories which revolve around time travel, or travel between alternate realities. They can be found in the collections The Seeds of Time and Consider Her Ways and others. Almost all of the stories in the second book in particular are based on the time-travel theme.

Karalk, The Anubis Gates is a little hard for me to describe without spoiling some of the fun of the plot. The main thrust is modern day academic studying an obscure Romantic poet travels back to 1800s England. Coleridge, Lord Byron, strange gypsies, Egyptian gods, a werewolf and an evil clown are also part of the plot. A strange but fun book.

Another reader here who did not like "Time Traveler's Wife." I found it confusing and manipulative at the same time.

Would Byatt's "Possession" count as a time travel novel?

Re above reference to the older film with Reeve and Seymour, would that be the movie " Somewhere in Time", which was filmed on wonderful MacKinac Island, Michigan?

No (about Possession) because the characters themselves did not go through time. (tho its been a while since I read it and I can be persuaded - what makes you think that it might?)

I personally feel it would be quite useful to know the winner of the 3.45 at Ascot while I was standing at the bookies at 3.00.

Heinlein has a couple of classic short stories, "By His Bootstraps" and "All You Zombies" that are a lot of fun.

There is another that I came across while reading Brian Aldiss' 1976 Billion Year Spree, The True History of Science Fiction wherein a time traveler to the past recognizes another when he hears him whistling the Beatles song "Yesterday." I've been searching for that passage and that novel, off and on, for over a decade now. I might just have to break down and re-read the history.

Speaking of Heinlein, don't forget "The Door into Summer," a classic time-travel tale. As I recall (I read this in the 1960s) the "future" takes place in about 1980 so you would need to make a mental adjustment to the dates! Which makes me wonder, why is progress so behind schedule?

Hee, thats funny that I'd forgotten that one. Its one of my fav Heinleins. I read it in the 80s, but the dates didn't seem off. Fun book (tho in our house we say the cats are looking for the door into winter...)
