OT: two bigs dogs minus one

Hello friends,

My life has been quite hectic lately and I have not posted on RP in many weeks. I have missed all of you but now I am back. Thank you to all who have noticed my absence.

As you know, I am a dog lover and owner of two big dogs, hence my name here. Sadly, my best friend Snoopy, my Landseer Newf mix, died on Tuesday, March 9. He was the best, smartest, most beautiful dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. My days are sad and long without him. He died of natural causes, at home, in my arms, staring into my eyes. We were together until the end, just as I promised him. He celebrated his tenth birthday on March 1 with pupcakes and cheeseburgers. I will miss him forever. Thanks for listening.

PAM, welcome back. You have my sincere condolescence on the loss of your pet. I am a dog-lover all my life. I lost my first Samoyed on a day in March. He also died at home, at the age of 14. I remember how we buried him in our back yard and put daffodils on his grave. We got another Samoyed, but had raised "Frosty" from a pup and never got over his loss.

Pam, I'm so sorry for your loss. Many years ago I had a Newfoundland, so I know what generous and loving personalities they have. Many dogs are wonderful companions but Newfs are unique; not better, but different. You will never forget him, but as time passes your memories will bring you a tender joy.

I hope your other dog is bearing up well. He must be lonely these days.

Thanks guys! Seil, I didn't think of the bloom color/ season aspect...now if my memory serves, it does usually have a bit more color than it did Wednesday when I took the pictures, so perhaps I usually see it at the beginning of summer, when it has more color. OLOG has a dedicated drip head (as do most of my roses) and the rest seem to be doing fine, so I don't think it is heat stress, but perhaps I should check the rip head just to make sure. Denise, While I have three dogs, they are miniature dachshunds, and it is doubtful they could reach that high. LOL. I also think due to the roses position in the bed, it might not be a place they would think of to pee. Claferg, I really will have to pay attention next time I head up to my mom's house in cooler weather to check the bloom colors. She is homebound and not able to take care of her yard, and really wants me to bring it down to my garden...and I am thinking about it seriously. The blooms are so lovely and delicate seeming, but borne in great clusters, so they never seem lost on the shrub. Jeri, There really doesn't seem to be any signs of gopher issues around the yard. I would expect the tell-tale mound to be somewhere, and for more than just one plant to have damage. Its such a weird instance. Do you think it would be possible to move a plant as old as that La Marne? it was planted in our yard sometime in the early 90's. It isnt a huge bush, but should I cut it back in fall and transplant it then? Veronica, Although I do love the Cuban Gold Duranta, it was for sure not that. this had some bright green new growth, but the older foliage was a good bit darker. Plus I don't think duranta grows to shoulder height. This was a huge hedge in front of the Ringling Museum of art, kept beautifully trimmed, and I thought to myself, this would be a lovely hedge background to roses. I am pretty sure the graft is above ground, at least by an inch or two. I never knew we were supposed to raise the graft above soil line, but aesthetically it just looks better to me, so I always have. LOL. Luckily I am now growing own-roots instead...much less involved. It is a pity the manure source went south, but perhaps another will come along, I finally bought an SUV and will be getting a high side trailer, so it will be easier for me to collect it as well. Just another vote for making a police report. If you feel silly about it, think of it this way: next time, it could be a child. A history of aggression is needed to establish that the dog needs to be controlled. A few police reports on cats being attacked and adults harrassed could save a child. And if the dog is so territorial that it will come into your yard and attack a leashed animal (and make sure the police know the cat was leashed!) then it may be a danger to children, too. (even if you don't think so--are you willing to risk it?) Call the cops, vet bills in hand.

SO much better than the first. :) I'm worried about the human dynamics of the shoe thing, though. This isn't a closet, it's a mudroom. That means wet, possibly muddy shoes, right? Shoes above message center doesn't sound practical. I think if you fitted the bottom of each locker area with a tray for shoes and maybe a little shelf or pouch or basket above it for houseshoes, you have half a chance of them not ending up in a pile on the floor (projecting ahead to the possible larger family). Re the sink: Once it's installed can't you tile the outside side of the grooming tub? Especially if the sink is going to be smaller. Or if the tile won't work, surely you could do metal mirror, or cabinetry, or something else pretty. FRIDGE tub sink really would look best, assuming that the fridge surround gives it enough spacing away from the wall to open fully. If the door swing and other issues keep it at tub FRIDGE sink, you could minimize the impact by putting cabinetry all the way up around each section, instead of just around the fridge. Then they'd echo the look of the lockers on the other side. That would make sense of the arrangement, and, even though it might look a little more closed in, it wouldn't actually be any different, and would look a lot better.

Since this is a kitchen forum I forgot to mention another piece of food-related advice! Work on making your dog comfortable with people near, around, and maybe even touching her food and bowl while she eats. I would often put food down for my dog when she was a puppy (after some brief obedience work) and then add yummy treats while she ate. She is completely comfortable with our proximity to her food and has never shown an ounce of food aggression, despite being very food driven. With a child in the house, I imagine this would be even more important. Not having any children, I'm not certain I can give specifics, but perhaps as you're training your pup in proper behavior around your child you can also help teach your child restraint and kindness with your pup. So often I see children interacting in a very negative manner with household pets and I worry that it could be a disaster waiting to happen. Maybe you child can be involved in some of the meal giving and treat giving (and training? Sorry I'm not knowledgeable about children) to help cement the dogs place comfortably at the bottom of your pack/family with minimal stress. marcolo - I'm sorry you've had such bad experiences with owners. Unfortunately there seems to be a plethora of inconsiderate, immature, uneducated, and downright dangerous dog owners in the world. There are so many wonderful dog owners out there, but I imagine they're more difficult to spot since their dogs are probably unobtrusive and not remarkable. Although I am a dog owner, I too have experienced the frustration of neighbors allowing their dogs to use my lawn as a toilet. I have also suffered loose dog attacks on my leashed dog as well as on myself. My own petite mother (a responsible large dog owner) was attacked last year by a very aggressive 100+lb dog while carrying groceries to her car. Nearly always the problem seems to arise with the owners. Sometimes, however, dogs are just difficult, and the best an owner can do is attempt to minimize annoyances like aggressive barking within the home and keep the animal contained to prevent anyone from being harmed. Other times, they develop techniques like complex introduction routines to help a difficult animal. I think the best we can do is take responsibility for our own pets, help educate others, and be patient with people who are doing their best to be responsible with a difficult pet.

Hello PAM,

So sorry to hear about Snoopy. Only another dog lover can truly understand how we feel when we lose one of our beloved companions.

We still talk about our wonderful yellow lab, Olga, who died over six years ago. We still call her "the best dog ever," although we have two more wonderful dogs now. One of them is an old guy -- our best guess is 14 or 15. He was a rescue dog - part terrier and part miniature pinscher. We dread the day we lose him.

I'm glad you're back with us, and I hope we can distract you a bit as you begin to heal.

so sorry to hear about Snoopy. Our animals occupy such a unique place on our lives, and leave an empty space when they go. But the pain now would not happen if you hadn't had the joy before. And the joy makes the memories.

Not quite appropos, but substitute dog for cat and anyway it might make you smile. I am so sorry about Snoopy. He sounds like a dog of a lifetime. My own pets are very special to me, and all my sympathy is with you. In an odd way I envy you, because you have the ability to feel so deeply about Snoopy and your other dogs. Not everyone can enrich their life by knowing an animal, those who can are truly blessed. For myself, I can't imagine not living with dogs and cats and any other creature that wants to be friends, even though a sad parting is inevitable. And Snoopy was lucky to have you, too!

PAM, I too am so sorry to hear about Snoopy. Our current dog is our first, so I have yet to go through that loss, but I know how hard it will be.
Our dogs are part of the family and will always be loved dearly and greatly missed.

So sorry to hear about Snoopy! As cutesy as the saying is, dogs ARE just little people in fur suits -- they hold special places in our hearts and are members of the family.

I grew up with a cat, but fell in love with my DH's dog the minute I met her. I can honestly say I fell in love with the dog before I fell in love with DH ;) Her passing was traumatic to say the least. Our current Border Collie is twelve years old and arthritic, and I cherish every moment I have with him as I know there is less time ahead than behind us.

Glad you're back. As sarah canary said, I hope RP can be a happy distraction from your loss.

My heart dropped when I saw your subject heading and I almost did not want to read the posting but we are all "family" here so must join in with the sad times as well as the happy ones. Like many others on this thread, I have had and lost family pets. I offer my condolences and wish you joy of the happy memories that come after the grief of loss.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt posts. Snoopy was indeed a very very special guy, one in a million.

And thank you for sharing some stories about your own pets. It means a lot to know that you understand. I wish you all many many happy healthy loving years with your pets. They are family, they do understand, and they are all special.

And thank you friends, as Ann said, for being here in the sad times as well as the happy ones. It means so very much that I can post about him here.

I was so sorry to read your message. We, also, have two very old dogs, one of whom is definitely on borrowed time, and every day, we have to wonder if he will be alive when we come from home. So I understand where you're coming from. I hope we can do the same for Obie's last moments as you did for Snoopy.

I bet you miss him like crazy - I know I will miss ours...

I, too, wish to offer my condolences. People who don't have pets don't really understand that our pets are members of our family. I recently lost one of my cats. We never knew how old he was since he showed up as an adult stray but we had him for over 10 years and we miss him greatly.

PAM, my heart fell when I saw the title of your post too, my sympathies to you and, as Rosefolly aptly pointed out, your other dog too. I remember when our doberman died unexpectedly, and our Komondor sat herself down on the 'doggie path' (a trail the very-active doberman had worn across our lawn) and waited for days and days for her friend to come running down the path again. Give your dog a hug for us.

I'm sorry, too, Pam. I have an opposite story. My brother-in-law died recently, and his much loved Jack Russell dog is bereft. She just sits and waits for him.

Thank you friends, Each and every one of your comments has brought a smile to my face. I feel for all of you who have lost pets in the past. Each and every day is special. I often hear people say to enjoy each day because we just never know if it is our last... now I take it to heart.

There will never be another dog like Snoopy. He was one in a billion. But instead of focusing on the fact that he is not here with me anymore, I am trying to focus on the fact that I was so very lucky to have shared ten years of my life with this amazing dog... no, not just a dog, my best friend and companion.

Your friendship through the years has always meant a lot to me, and now it means even more. Thank you for everything. You will never know how much your messages have helped me to heal.

Just a note: we had to put our fourteen year old Australian Shepherd to sleep today. It's incredibly sad but we feel that we did the right thing. The quality of life just wasn't there for him any more.

I had no idea I had this many tears stored up inside me. So much for the stiff upper lip of English people.

Obie - the worst puppy in the world, but a grand old man in the end.

May you catch those jackrabbits now.

Lemonhead-My sympathy for your loss. We had the same situation with our "Walter" also a old shephard. You will never forget "Obie" but remember that he had your love during his brief life and that was a blessing for both of you.

I am sending you strength and love to get through this difficult time. The hurt is unbearable, I know... but somehow, the love and caring of friends helps you to heal. We can get through this... you shall be in my thoughts.
Maybe your Obie and my Snoopy are now the best of friends waiting until it's their time to cross over the rainbow bridge and back to us.

I am so sorry to hear of your losses. My pets bring laughter and light to me each day, I cannot bear to think of being without them, although I know that one day the time may come.
