Looking for regional or topical fiction recommendations

I'm not sure I'm stepping on toes here, perhaps this isn't the forum for more mundane fiction? If so, apologies and any directions to good other forums thankfully accepted.

Otherwise, in looking for good but nevertheless still escapist reading experiences I like books that imbue you with a region or educate about a topic or period as you go along. But I run into dry spells when I can't find new authors or books and its rather hard to google for. One example would be something like Joesph Heywood's A Wood's Cop mystery series which both has the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has a central character and interesting information on the life of fish and game officers. The who dun it part is, to me anyway, of secondary importance.

Any recommendations?
