Spurge is Euphorbia, right? They ooze milky sap that is an irritant. I would doubt they can be rooted as easily as the succulent sedums, but I've never tried. Both plants look best in poor soil, excess nutrition leads to weaker stems and leaves that lack the characteristic colorations.

In reading comments here and at Daves Garden some folks say E1 are really hardy and others say they have not been successful with them. This may be because they didn't "really" buy an E1 ( disreputable dealers are NOT unknown). But my suspicion is has more WHERE the tree is planted ( protected from the cold winter winds and exposed too too much "winter" and it's age ( ie: a larger tree with a fully developed root system rather than a twig with 1 years grafted root system which is what mostr folks buy cuase they are CHEAPER) are probably more the key to E1's and many other alledgedly hardy JM's including supposedly hardy dissectums. And of course HOW bad the winter is . I don't think around here this years or last years winter would give us much insite into "winter hardiness" for zone 5 for most any cultivar. Lastly you are in zone 6 and if you have a problem with those that are" alledgedly zone 5 hardy it's most likely, as I said above, a placement problem ...David

Thanks to all of you for your kind concern. I've learned my lesson with fertilizers. I have a Carrie mango now. Ever since I planted it a couple of months ago, I only gave it a light fertilizing once. It has sent out some new growth, but lately it has stopped growing. With my Lychee Brewster. It has not grown--everything remains the same since 5-6 months ago. It is so weird. It looks just like a stature (a lychee stature that is). I see some little new sprouts, but those were all dried up. The leaves are not dropping or anything like that, but it just stalls. At the same time I gave my Emperior the spike, I also gave this Brewster a spike. But the stalling happened way before the spike was given. On the other hand, my Lychee Mauritius is a happy camper. I think it was given a spike also. After what happened to my emperor, I decided to stop playing around with any fertilizer and let the plants rest for a while. However, although Brewster has sent out new growth, it has not sent out any blooms. Last year, both the Mauritius and Brewster and even the Longan sent out blooms and fruited. I think the fact that Mauritius and Longan are not blooming this year is because I've relocated them. If any of you has any advice for me (especially on why my Brewster is doing nothing for 5-6 months) and with regards to fertilizing and watering for lychees, longans and mangos, I would greatly appreciate it. By the way, puglvr1, both your plants look very healthy and your pug is way too cute!

In the 6th grade reading anthology used in our school district a few years ago, there was a short story about the internment-well, actually the "schools" within the camps-and every year there were parents who protested that we were teaching the students to "be critical" of the government. THAT's the scariest thing of all! They never succeeded in getting the story banned, however. I actually thought it was a good treatment of the events, in that it didn't hit these 11-12 years old over the head with it, but they could begin to see that there are events in our history that we must not forget and must be sure to prevent from happening again. Now-back to the thread- can you tell us more about the author and her/his background?
