Cuttings from wallflowers?

I have recently taken loads of cuttings from my Erysimum 'Bowles mauve' and every single one has rooted in record time.

This has got me thinking. If I tried taking cuttings from bedding wallflowers, would they also root? I know they are Cheiranthus rather than Erysimum, but they are obviously related.

Has anyone tried this? I'm going to give it a go anyway.

I'm sure you can but as it is so easy to grow vigorous plants annually from seed I don't think it is a common practice. Cheiranthus cheiri the wallflower is synonymous with Erysimum cheiri - if I'm not behind with my
nomemclature.
Botanically Cheiranthus is not distinct from Erysimum.

My problem is that I am not always organised enough to have planted seed at the right time, although I have grown my own many times. Also I don't have an awful lot of space to grow up enough stock during the summer.

I usually take out all the terminal buds from wallflowers anyway, to make them bush, so I might as well try rooting them. I can't bear to see a bit of plant wasted!

Thanks drexler- I'm glad I don't have to! =) They didn't come with instructions- do you have any idea of which nutrient I should be looking at for higher content in the fertilizer (you suggested for foliage- nitrogen?), should I go for blooms (is that potassium or phosphate?) or should I just use a balanced?

Well, there are wallflowers and wallflowers. Your orange ones look like the classic Siberian wallflowers, e.allionii and will do better sown as annuals but those long blooming Bowles mauves - sterile. And various hybrids which have been appearing on the market. Of course, this is not necessarily a bad thing since sterile plants invariably bloom for far longer than their fertile relatives - classic case is the Rozanne geranium). However, regardless of whether they set seed or not, most wallflowers are solidly perennial and will return happily, year on year. The ripping them out spring bedding thing is a bit of an industry con (as, in fact, are many of these tender bedding plants which are sold as annuals). I leave mine to do their spring thing, flopping around under the tulips and such, chopping them back after flowering.

Wallflowers (Chieranthus) are perennial, only biennial on heavy soils. However, the norm is to grow them annually and treat them as biennials. Sow in May, plant out in October and discard after flowering in late spring. You may get a minor flush of flowers in a mild winter if your plants are well advanced. It seems you have the choice of clearing them out to make the space you need or leaving them to flower again in spring. I think the ideal would have been to have had some young ones to plant out as mentioned above, taking up less space. When they do overwinter they become woody and leggy anyway. My Website

I absolutely love wallflowers, their spicy fragrance especially after a rain. When I was very young I used to race across the street to old Mr Mowatt's when his were in bloom, I'd knock on their door and ask if I could go and smell the wallflowers that were in bloom along the side of his house LOL. I do have a couple of dwarf Erysimums 'Fragrant Sunshine' and 'Winter Orchid' In the past I have grown 'Bowles Mauve', 'John Codrington', 'Ems' and 'Constant Cheer'. I should have taken cuttings of these to kept them going as they don't seem to be long lived for me and they are very hard to find around here, in fact I have never found 'Ems' again. I have 'Honeyberry' written down on my spring shopping list along with a few other things:), I'm been trying so hard to curtail this list but alas it seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. Annette

I love the orange bedder variety of wallflower and have some plants in flower in the garden now. There are lots of different shades of orange in the flowers and no two plants are identical either. However, one plant has brighter and cheerier flowers and still looks immaculate after the rain compared to the others so I will have a go at taking cuttings from this one. I think it should be easy with cuttings taken from the spring growth.
