Cuttings from wallflowers?

I have recently taken loads of cuttings from my Erysimum 'Bowles mauve' and every single one has rooted in record time.

This has got me thinking. If I tried taking cuttings from bedding wallflowers, would they also root? I know they are Cheiranthus rather than Erysimum, but they are obviously related.

Has anyone tried this? I'm going to give it a go anyway.

I'm sure you can but as it is so easy to grow vigorous plants annually from seed I don't think it is a common practice. Cheiranthus cheiri the wallflower is synonymous with Erysimum cheiri - if I'm not behind with my
nomemclature.
Botanically Cheiranthus is not distinct from Erysimum.

My problem is that I am not always organised enough to have planted seed at the right time, although I have grown my own many times. Also I don't have an awful lot of space to grow up enough stock during the summer.

I usually take out all the terminal buds from wallflowers anyway, to make them bush, so I might as well try rooting them. I can't bear to see a bit of plant wasted!

Thanks drexler- I'm glad I don't have to! =) They didn't come with instructions- do you have any idea of which nutrient I should be looking at for higher content in the fertilizer (you suggested for foliage- nitrogen?), should I go for blooms (is that potassium or phosphate?) or should I just use a balanced?

When I had my gravel hill garden, I would take cuttings of my burnt orange, mahogany, blood red and purple wall flowers stick them in the garden here and there... most would root and spring was beautiful. Here in my moist loamy woodland clearing hill garden, the many that I moved have dwindled to none this year the garden's 4th yr. I was nostalgic for them this week... but I've moved on. Though I am thinking of ordering some half inch minus as mulch for my long border.

Thank you, Annie, for the legend and pretty pic! I cannot grow wallflowers as perennials here altho I often used to cut them for my DM as a child. She had them in a narrow bed along one side of the house between the sidewalk and the house. Possibly they self-seeded as I remember it as a rather wild bed full of flowers different from her other flower beds.

No luck propagating Bowles Mauve Erysimum (wallflower)

Peat pellets are OK providing they don't dry out. You shouldn't have any problems with Bowles Mauve - make sure that the prop material is not too old and woody. Reduce some of the foliage and use a rooting powder. Keep it in the shade unless you have a mist unit. Use a good quality cutting mix - open but also moisture retentive. Don't let it dry out. I love the orange bedder variety of wallflower and have some plants in flower in the garden now. There are lots of different shades of orange in the flowers and no two plants are identical either. However, one plant has brighter and cheerier flowers and still looks immaculate after the rain compared to the others so I will have a go at taking cuttings from this one. I think it should be easy with cuttings taken from the spring growth.
