No stem attached at all. The root came from the bottom of the pot, it was growing out the drainage hole. When I moved the pot it came up out of the ground, so I cut it off at the bottom of the pot. Placed it in a seed starting mix with the top of the root level with the top of the soil, put a ziplock baggie over it, held on by a rubber band, for humidity. And sat it in a south facing window. It now has about a inch of new growth on it. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures, wish I had.

Hi I have a huge Rose apple tree (syzygium Jambos) loaded with flowers and I would like to graft it with wax Jambu varieties (ie black pearl, Black diamond, any red). Does anyone have cuttings they can provide? I can exchange for a Tuberose bulb (mother with pups attached, huge 4 inch bulb) or for rose apple cuttings from my tree. I also have dragon fruit cuttings (White flesh, not suer but could be Vietnamese giant variety) Reply here on houzz if you're interested.

Usually you would cut right at a joint. Let the cutting callus for a few days. Keep soil rather dry for the cutting. Beware the sap!

big city location ... i would not cut since it was just planted ... its still probably settling in.. and growing roots .. until winter ... so let it .. if you cut it all off .. that stops the energy the sun provides .. even this time of year ... it took me a long time.. to appreciate that plants basically self muclh for winter ... and the top part of the plant .. in my MI ... collapses and protects the crown ... there really isnt much of a reason to ever have to cut back anything ... the peeps who came up with cleaning their gardens in fall .. probably clean their house too .. whats that all about ... or even worse.. clean the garden and dont clean the house all winter ... double whats that all about. .. lol ... bottom line.. you dont have to do anything.. ever .. [we are NOT talking about disease/bug issues] .... and anyone who suggests otherwise... has ulterior motives .. or just hates you .. to each his/her own ... dont let them mess with your head ... and i dont mean our friends who come here to answer .. im talking garden shows.. MILs ... etc ... peeps who want to sell you rakes.. paper refuse bags ... etc. ... its all marketing hype ... ken ps: riddle me this ... so a tree in fall .. drops all these natural ..key word.. FREE .. leaves ... and 99% of peeps spend all fall raking them out of the gardens .. only to .... in spring.. go buy bulk mulch to put on the garden beds.. why not just leave them there [pun intended] ... and skip paying money ... design your garden.. so it works ...
