My experience with dogwoods - C.mas, I've only sampled unnamed seedlings - fruits are very tart & astringent until 'dead ripe' - I like 'em, but many folks don't; C.kousa - the ripe fruits contain a pleasant-tasting, somewhat grainy pulp, with a flavor reminiscent of pawpaw(to me, anyway). I've not had many folks I've shared kousa fruits with who really liked them - but most don't care for pawpaws or persimmons, either. Mulberries - hard to beat Illinois Everbearing, though I don't know for sure how it performs in the PNW - long bearing season(early June-late July, here), large berries with great flavor & sweet/tart balance. Collier & Stearns are also very good producers with good flavor; I've been disappointed with Wellington. Pakistan, Shangri-La, and some of the other large-fruited M.alba selections might also work well for you in a zone 8 setting.

Those fruits do look very similar. Sugar Apple is Annona squamosa. The name Custard Apple is mixed up depending on where you are. Here it's a hybrid of Annona squamosa X Annona cherimola and is the main commercially produced one. Annona reticulata is also referred to as Custard Apple (and sometimes so is Annona squamosa). I have a brown one which should probably be Annona reticulata, but that is supposed to have a very 'ordinary taste'. Mine has a good taste, so don't know.

This is a fantastic Apple Bread from the Ruralite cookbook, circa 1977. The recipe itself is dated 11/73 and is from a Mrs. Donald Waters, Fernwood ID. Fresh Apple Bread 1 c. sugar 1/2 c. shortening 2 eggs, beaten 1 c. ground or grated apple (I just dice fine) 1/2 tsp. salt 2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 c. chopped pecans or walnuts, floured 1 1/2 T. buttermilk Cream sugar and shortening. Add beaten eggs and apple. Mix in dry ingredients. Add vanilla, buttermilk and nuts. Pour into greased/floured loaf pan. Sprinkle top with 3 T. sugar and 1 tsp. cinnamon. Bake at 350 about an hour or until toothpick comes out clean. Deanna

I bought a red variety of malay apple last summer, about 2 ft tall. Planted in the ground without any amendment , move it three times and now is about 5-6 ft tall and looking happy. I am thinking of air layering it because the location is not ideal but the plant is too big to move. As far as I know, the plant/tree is very large when mature. I remembered (from my childhood before moving here) them as being as big as mango tree, must be more than 30 ft tall.
