Anthemis - have I bought the wrong one?

I have seen plenty of pictures of anthemis "EC Buxton" in books, but never in real life. The photos are lovely, so a couple of months ago I bought one.

It is blooming like mad, but the colour is a real disappointment. I was expecting a beautiful pale yellow, but have got a non descript wishy washy cream. Perhaps it was mislabelled, but it certainly isn't the same colour as in the photos.

I've since discovered that there is a variety called "Wargrave", which is also pale yellow.

Does anyone else grow these plants? What do you recommend? Is EC Buxton really pale yellow, or is it always more of a cream?

Also, should I chop them right back after flowering? They look like they are probably going to need it.

I bought a plant labelled as EC Buxton recently and I'd describe the petals as creamy yellow (rather than just cream). I wouldn't describe it as a washed out colour. The pics I've seen of Wargrave on the web looked very similar to those of EC Buxton and I wonder if you might have 'Sauce Hollandaise' instead. The label on the plant I bought said to cut back after flowering.

I have EC Buxton too, and it is a lovely soft creamy yellow, but straggly though.

Depends on how much heat you experience. These are designed for summer growing and onions are a cool weather crop. It is late to start onions from seed, but if you can keep them alive, you should get green onions. Long day onions are designed to begin bulbing in late June early July. Takes about 16 hours of daylight. Short Day onions bulb in March and can need as little as 10 hours.

Thanks for the quick response, Nancy! Actually, the bags I bought were on sale for 1.95 each, whereas the MG Potting Mix was 7.95 for a 2 cu. ft. bag *sigh* Like a dork, I thought I was buying something "better", AND saving a few bucks in the process...it figures, I made a newbie error. Probably the first of many *giggle* I'll probably hang onto them, maybe store them in the garage. One of the bags broke when I took it out of the trunk, so now all three are muddy and messy; I'm sure I'll find a use for the soil somewhere. Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated! Glad it worked out for you. After you've had a chance to try both styles, do post back your impressions. Based on info from Vollrath's site, the 68371 "bun" pans (jelly roll style w/ four raised sides) are the same gauge aluminum as the 68085 sheets. The raised sides **shouldn't** make much difference in baking quality, even in convection mode. The CI article tested one jelly roll-style pan in the issue #74 article. It was a WearEver Commercial pan in tinned steel. The only dun seemed to be the fact that it had four raised sides -- CI felt it was easier (& resulted in more intact cookies) to remove liner sheets (parchment or silicone) when the long sides of the sheet are flat, like on the #1 rated Vollrath. Otherwise, the baking & durability ratings for the WearEver were the same as Vollrath -- three stars.

Worried I Bought the Wrong Potting Mix

For your purposes, I'd suggest something more like Raybo's 3-2-1 mix instead of Al's 5-1-1. Are you familiar with Ray Newstead's (aka Raybo) EarthTainer? If not, it's a self-watering planter built from plastic totes, and his potting mix recommendations should work just as well in your planter as they do in his. His general purpose mix is 5 parts ProMix BX (or Miracle Gro potting mix if ProMix is hard to find or too expensive) and 1 part perlite, but his preferred mix is 3 parts ProMix, 2 parts pine bark fines (aka "micro bark"), and 1 part perlite (or 3-2-2 if substituting Miracle Gro potting mix for the ProMix). Both will wick moisture well, but the latter will provide superior aeration. I don't know how the potting mix that you purchased compares to ProMix, so I'd err on the side of caution and liken it to Miracle Gro's potting mix.

Having looked at some more photos, mine could well be Sauce Hollandaise. The problem I now have is where can I get hold of a nice pale yellow one? It took me ages to track down what I thought was the right variety. Any suggestions?

I know this is a cheeky request, but would anyone be willing to send me a few snippings in the post. They seem to root like mad. I would happily provide a stamped addressed envelope.
